Drunken Gamers Radio 03.07.2010

by Derek Lavigne in Games800 days ago

It’s the first week of Shmupreciation month so this week’s show is very shmup-based. Things start off with a preview of the Shmopera, followed by Drunk Dials and emails. Starting off the review segment is Mega Man 10 for various digital platforms. John says that although the game features an easy mode, he almost feel as if it makes things too easy. The guys discuss some of the games other features while Moe ridicules things as always. The retro review this week, like it will be all month, is a classic shmup in the form of Star Soldier...

Moe is out this week for undisclosed reasons, so Hilden and John have brought in two of their friends, Scott and John, who are working on this year’s Shmopera. Drunk Dials and emails start off the show and lead into a new contest for a prize submitted once again by a listener. First up for review is the Xbox Indie game Shoot1UP which is only a buck and the guys find no reason why it shouldn’t be purchased. Next is Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing which John says is right up there with Mario Kart for him, which is big praise for anyone...

Hilden is back this week and the guys are finally in their new DGR studio this week but unfortunately do not have any pictures yet. After a quick bate and switch tale about why Hilden was missing, an extended Drunk Dial and mailbag segment kicks off the show. Starting off the reviews segment, John attempts to discuss Noby Noby Boy for the iPhone, but Hilden and Moe keep giving him and the game so much crap that he can barely get a word in to explain the difference between this game and the PS3 version. Next up is Plants vs. Zombies for the iPhone...

The show starts off this week as usual with some entertaining, uplifting Drunk Dials but unfortunately the mailbag is not so lucky and ends on a downer. But doing their best to bring things right back up, the guys announce they are holding a contest to win a copy of Bayonetta which was donated by a listener. All you have you do is design the craziest Japanese video game character possible — this should be interesting. The reviews segment starts off this week with No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle for the Wii. John admitted that he hadn’t...

The guys have a bit of a shorter show this week with no Feature Presentation because they admittedly just couldn’t think of any. A longer than usual Drunk Dials/mailbag segment starts off the show with some really great messages. Reviews this week are a little light and start off with Dark Void Zero for DSiWare, which John says is very old-school, although can get very monotonous quickly. Next up is Muscle March for WiiWare which he proclaims game of the year in the same way that Noby Noby Boy was game of last year. The retro review for the...

Coming to us semi-live again this week (via a webcam on UStream) DGR starts off with a short Drunk Dial segment and emails before moving on to a “very January review segment”. First up is You Will Die, an Xbox Indie game which Hilden describes as a boss-rush shmup hybrid which doesn’t sound bad for $1. Staying with the Xbox Indie shmup theme, next up is Decimation-X which is a Space Invader clone with bullet hell elements added to it. Random Retro review this week is a little bit of a dud with NBA In The Zone for N64 which is as...

Drunken Gamers Radio 01.10.10

by Derek Lavigne in Games856 days ago

The Drunken Gamers ran a semi-live broadcast this week and thus got a bit more drunk than usual, which of course leads to more hilarity. Drunk Dials and emails start off the show again this week after being relegated to the end the previous episodes. Starting off the review segment is Trajectile for DSiWare, which John completely fails in describing, so they quickly move on. Next up is Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond, which Hilden seems to love despite most reviews being very negative on the game. A recorded segment by friend of the show Phil...

Starting off the new year with the same old drunkards, DGR changes up the show formatting a little bit this week and starts off with emails while the drunk dials move to the end of the show. One email asks the guys about the best way to get into shmups without having to deal with bullet hell. All three agree that Raiden Fighters Aces is a good place to start. The reviews segment starts off with Cartoon Wars-Gunner for the iPhone, which Hilden has been enjoying and describes as stick figure horde mode with upgrades. Next up is Castlevania: The Adventure...

Closing out the year, the DGR crew bring us their version of the game of the years, which they call the Daryl Awards in honor of their old landlord who was able to squeeze money from them out of nothing. Simply replace ‘money’ with ‘fun’ and you have the criteria for the DGR top 3 games of the year. They also plan on reading listener top 3 lists and give a final award to the most voted for listener pick. Starting off with their number 3 picks Hilden chose the open-world playground Red Faction: Guerrilla, while Moe and John...

This week is DGR’s “Wholesome Family Christmas Hour” special, which was recorded live on Friday night while broadcasting live on UStream. Joining the normal crew is Phil Kollar of Game Informer and Sean Sands of Gamers With Jobs. They start off the show with some naughty letters to Santa, one of which is the first thing I’ve ever seen that they refuse to read. The first review this week is Pac-Man CE for the iPhone, which John thinks is alright for the price but could use some work on the controls and Sean Sands says he found...

by Derek Lavigne in Features882 days ago

Editor’s note: Casting Gear is a series about podcasting and the tools used in the process. In this series, we hope to demystify the podcasting process and show the wide range of tools and methods that different podcasters use to produce a show. In addition to listing the software and hardware used, a brief rundown of the work-flow for the given podcast will be provided. Delving into technical minutiae isn’t the goal here, it is to provide a window into the different approaches that are in practice. The following text, unless otherwise noted,...

Drunken Gamers Radio 12-12-09

by Derek Lavigne in Games885 days ago

The full trio is back this week and start off the show by announcing that they will be doing their annual live Christmas show on Friday the 18th on uStream. John then goes into his Twitter battle with Gamers With Jobs’ Shawn Andrich which caused him to disappear for a week. From there they move in to Drunk Dials and emails for the week. Reviews start off with Dragon’s Lair for the iPhone, which the guys agree looks fantastic but does have a few issues with control. PixelJunk Shooter receives heaps of praise from all 3 guys after not...
