E3 is next week and the guys get into what they will be doing for the show. They also confirm that GameSpot will be providing live-streams of the big 3 press conferences. Red Faction Armageddon has been officially announced and Brian isn’t happy to hear that the lead character is changing. Infamous 2 is now official and although many around the web have enjoyed the recent trailer for Deus Ex 3, Brendan is not among them. The crew discusses where Assassin’s Creed may go next and then get into the regular weekly features. The homework...

Alpha Protocol kicks thing off and Tom delivers hit hater-aid in classic Mc Shea style. Kevin gave it a six, and while it sounds like head did find some good in Obsidian’s ambition, he agrees that the game just has too many problems to ignore. A few of the group saw the Prince of Persia movie and the opinions are fairly positive with the consensus being that the movie is pretty. Word that Insomniac is going multiplatform results in Tom again donning his hater-pants. He argues that exclusives are almost always better and have been his best...

It’s a short HotSpot this week with sickness and scheduling conflicts cited as issues. Justin is in the process od reviewing Red Dead Redemption, and he is enjoying it a lot. It sounds like Rockstar have a much stronger take on multiplayer here than they did with GTA4. Prince of Persia also comes off fairly well, and manages a 7.5 from Tom. The April NPDs were quite weak, and Microsoft VP let it slip that Project Natal will come out in October. After the usual 10 Years Ago feature, Brendan interview the author of video game history book The...

Alan Wake starts this week’s cast on a high note. Everyone is enjoying the game and the story gets some especially high praise. Lost Planet 2, on the other hand, takes some pretty hard blows from the group, including Kevin who says that it will be remembered in 10 years for having one of the worst levels of all time. The announcement of Little Big Planet 2 has Tom excited about all of the new user created levels that will inevitably appear. Wii Party gets a unanimous ”meh,” and the new God of War for PSP isn’t causing...

The HotSpot guys seem to be feeling rather rambunctious today so get a ready for a lot of bleeping during this episode. Halo Reach starts the discussion and everyone seems to be enjoying their time with the beta. Tom has the most to say about it before moving on to 3D Dot Game Heroes. In news, the Bungie/Activision deal is easily the biggest talking point this week, and the guys have mixed emotions about the situation. They do point out that Bungie must be pretty sure of their concept if they have a 10 year plan for the franchize when Halo hasn’t...

Kick-Ass starts the show this week. Although it’s not really game related, the guys enjoyed the movie a lot and want to recommend it. Capcom held their anual Captivate event last week in Hawaii and the biggest reveal was Marvel vs. Capcom 3. It will be in 3D, much like Street Fighter 4, and is said to feature more than 30 playable characters. The group talks a bit more about Splinter Cell and everyone is pretty high on the game. In news, word of a “taboo” new Kojima game kicks things off before the NPDs get some time. Software...

Splinter Cell Conviction is the big game this week. Chris and Kevin have been giving it a lot of time and their overall impressions are positive with Kevin giving it an 8.0 in his review. The guys highlight the co-op play as the game’s shining achievement. Konami held an event last week and showed a few games including the first potentially great 3D take on Castlevania. The founders of Infinity Ward were ousted by Activision, but they are back with a new studio, Respawn Entertainment. The group shares some thoughts on this news and touch...

Ricardo’s Wondercon experience is up first this week before the crew moves onto iPad discussion. No one is too excited about Apple’s latest portable, but they do run down some of the games. Mirror’s Edge gets pointed out as the right approach to these kind of games and then the conversation moves on to a potential controller peripheral for the iPhone. Cliff Bleszinski will appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday to make a big game announcement. Everyone is in agreement, it has to be Gears od War 3. The only question...

Tom starts the game talk this week with his impressions of Resonance of Fate and Cave Story. Never one to shy away from controversy, he calls Resonance of Fate “as good as Final Fantasy XIII.” The Nintendo 3DS was announced just after the recording of last week’s show, so the guys get into it here and the group is skeptical. Games moving into the 3D display space continues to inspire ambivalence. Microsoft has announced that they will be holding a special Project Natal event on June 13th, the night before their big E3 Media Briefing....

Kevin kicks things off this week with some love for Just Cause 2. Much like Crackdown, Just Cause 2 seems to offer some good ‘ol fashion open world craziness. Metro 2033 also receives a good bit of love despite some problems with its gunplay. Infinite Space is the last big release and it doesn’t fare quite is well as the first two with its 6.5 to their 8.0 scores. The rumors surrounding the Xbox 360 receiving an updated design and the addition of flash storage make a lot of sense to the crew. They are reasonably excited about these...

Two big games start the show this week. God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII recieved a 9.0 and 8.5 respectively, and Tom’s commentary on GoW III makes it clear that he completely loved the game. Kevin isn’t quite as high on FF XIII, but he still feels like it is an impressive, if clichéd-riddled, entry in the series. The guys are catching up on the news of last week, including the Activision/Infinity Ward issue and Ubisoft DRM situation. No one is too excited about the announcement of Socom 4, but after a little warming up, Portal...

Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing is up first this week and it sounds surprisingly interesting. If you don’t go in expecting Mario Kart quality, there may just be some fun HD kart racing to be had. Heavy Rain gets some discussion with both positive and negative views represented here with Tom arguing that you are forced in a certain direction too often. The guys touch on DICE and share their opinions on Jay Mohr’s hosting prowess. The announcement of Civilization V gets a somewhat tepid response and Brian laments his constant defeat in...

Some serious love for BioShock 2 starts that discussion this week. The opinions fall on both sides, but the phrase ‘better than the first one’ is uttered several times. Dante’s Inferno doesn’t fair nearly as well with the guys labeling it as a complete direct rip of God of War. Sonic 4 doesn’t inspire much positivity either. Xbox Live service for the original Xbox is coming to an end and the indifference it palpable. A PSP iteration of the forthcoming PS3 racer, ModNation Racers, has been announced and the crew worries...

Brendan is back this week and MAG kicks off the discussion. Chris Watters gave the game an 8.0 in his review, but struggles to get too excited about it in his time here. White Knight Chronicles has finally seen a US release, but it seems to have fallen short in many ways. Star Trek Online doesn’t do much for the console-centric group, and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom incites some anime discussion. Lost Planet 2 will be released on May 18 and it was announced that Marcus and Dom from Gears of War will be playable characters– weird. A 3 year...

The HotSpot 01/19/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games752 days ago

We get a truncated episode this week since the guys missed their usual recording time due to the holiday on Monday. This actually feels like the perfect length for The HotSpot though, so hopefully this a trend that will continue. Chris Watters makes his requisite cameo appearance up front here to share his thoughts on Dark Void. It has had a somewhat troubled development, and it seems shows in the final product. NPDs get a bit of time as usual, but there are no big insights here– spoiler alert, Nintendo controls the charts again. It could...
