It’s time for another round of media, but we do briefly hit some Apple stuff from WWDC before jumping into the show proper.

In games it is a mix of throwbacks and new technology. I spend a few contradiction-filled minutes talking about Dream:scape (I really do like it) and then hit some DarkStar One. Then it is on to Jon who has finally made the plunge into OnLive.

Jon kicks off movies with some X-Men: First Class talk, and then I hit a trio of documentaries from HBO. Erik starts TV talk with Game of Thrones (no spoilers) and that leads into some serious Peter Dinklage and The Station Agent love.

It wouldn’t be a MCC episode without some music talk, so, here, enjoy some Nicki Minaj (NSFW):

Also, Erik likes him some Bon Iver.

Here’s the list:

Games

Tiger Woods 12

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes HD

Fling

Movies

Red Box

Hanna

Music

Arcade Fire/The National

The XX

Jon and I had a few “discussions” regarding The Fast & the Furious franchise, Tron: Legacy and the Black Eyed Peas. The most heated one was a debate on the merits of the Black Eyed Peas vs. The Fast & the Furious. Unfortunately, we had stopped recording in time to capture the genius of that discussion. Luckily, we did get the conversation where I compared Tron to Star Wars: Episode 2. Don’t miss it after the ending music if you enjoy ridiculous debates.

When I first heard that The Totally Rad Show was going to be changing format from a weekly video show to a bite-sized daily segments, it seemed clear that this was primarily a move to serve sponsors and garner more “clicks”. After finally giving it a chance a couple weeks later, I was proven dead wrong and earned a new appreciation for one of Revision3′s longest running podcasts.

Basically, our hosts Jeff Cannata, Daniel Trachtenburg, and Alex Albrecht take us on a daily ride into a single movie, video game, television show, comic book, or any number of other activities. In the case of the first four, they offer their opinions in a roundtable format, much like any other podcast you might be familiar with. As far as other activities go, the guys have dipped into event coverage, devised clever weekly games in which to compete with each other, and tried something that they’ve always wanted to try out (like training for Lucha Libre wrestling, geocaching, or even trying out different As Seen On TV products).

The charm and style of The Totally Rad Show shines strongly through the video portion of the show, which mostly centers in on the trio talking face to face. While this might not seem to be anything too important, there’s something intangibly satisfying about feeling like you’re just sitting around with some friends and having that watercooler conversation that you might expect in such a setting. Furthermore, they take advantage of the extra space on screen to show trailers, screenshots, posters, and quick facts that highlight either the media in question or something referenced within the flow of conversation.

Best of all, the daily format of the show keeps a constant flow of new content available and allows you to pick and choose what you may or may not be interested in actually checking out. If you’d like to give The Totally Rad Show a try, their Media Mashup segments are always a treat and their reviews of Unknown and The Chicago Code are worth checking out.

This week’s Screened-cast starts things off with discussion about this year’s Super Bowl. The pre-show butchering of the National Anthem, Frank Caliendo, crazy sports commentator shenanigans, and a jingoistic America F-yeah! montage join the terrible Black Eyed Peas halftime show add up to a bizarre peripheral Super Bowl experience, but the game itself and a handful of solid commercials seemed to make the whole thing worthwhile to the guys.

Rorie reviewed The Roommate this week, which seems to be a boiled down, college-age version of Single White Female for this generation. He goes on to say that the PG-13 rating didn’t do it any favors, as a total lack of blood tears out any stakes to speak of. Alex reviewed Sanctum, the oddly James Cameron-endorsed corny thriller that seems to go against the grain about everything Cameron has been saying about 3D for years now.

The show wraps up with emails and the Screened movie club picks of the week, Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo and Sanjuro.

Hey! The Super Bowl happened! Yeah, yeah, we’re not a sports site, but when the biggest sporting event on TV of the year happens, you can bet we’ll have a thing or two to say about botched National Anthems, horrid halftime shows, Charles Barkley blackface, and commercial stupidity. We also talk about The Roommate and Sanctum, Yojimbo and Sanjuro, and some other random crap I’m too tired to think of right now. Wooooo! Sports yelling!

This week’s Behind the Screened Door is back to normal after last week’s Oscar bonanza, starting things off with Alex’s impressions of The Mechanic. In typical Jason Statham movie fashion, the film doesn’t really have a substantive plot but manages to entertain with the good fight scenes and a fun assassination training montage with Ben Foster. They proceed to talk more about Statham’s career, which they heartily agree could just as easily fit into the same mold as Schwarzenegger’s.

Rorie dives into The Rite, which has a decent cast but not nearly enough scares to really deserve a $10 ticket. As an exorcism movie, they are quite disappointed with the total lack of gore, good writing, or homage to The Exorcist. The wrap up new movie talk with some thoughts on January’s offerings, which haven’t really been succeeded on the critical or financial fronts.

After burning through a few short pieces of news, the guys close out the show with their discussion of the Screened movie club pick Network.

Man, it’s tough imagine that we’ve ever done a more tangential and scattered podcast than today’s. Maybe it’s because Rorie’s suffering from a wicked case of avian flu, or maybe it’s because Alex is still halfway between east coast time and a parallel dimension, but man, we cannot help ourselves. A simple talk about The Mechanic deviates into a larger treatise on the career of Jason Statham, discussing The Rite becomes a longer talk about what is/isn’t PG-13 horror, I think we spent a third of our Network discussion talking about The Running Man, and at some point I think we just started talking about movies coming out in March for no discernible reason. Mind the sniffles, folks, it’s Behind the Screened Door!

Gary Whitta wanders in from the Tested side of the office to be a guest on this week’s Behind the Screened Door, primarily showing up to discuss the Oscar nominations. First off, the guys talk about how the ten nominations for best picture are far more appropriate in this year of movies, due to the huge pool of fantastic films with many that people have actually heard of. The King’s Speech and The Social Network are clearly the front-runners of the pack, though Alex and Gary agree that Inception may be the reasonable, populist pick.

Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) is far and away the podcast’s prediction for best actor, while the best actress is up for a bit more contention between Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine), and Annette Bening (The Kids Are Alright). The best director spot is noticeably devoid of Christopher Nolan (Inception), so the guys begrudgingly predict that the Academy might select David Fincher (The Social Network) or Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan).

After the guys burn through the rest of the categories, the guys appropriately transition into the Razzies, which seem a little overwrought with pandering to Twilight haters. The show then closes out with user questions and some conversation about the week’s classic movie club pick, The Omen.

Hey guys, didja hear about them Oscars? They gots nominations and stuff! Do you want to hear us talk about them? Perhaps even espouse opinions on them? For, like, 80 MINUTES STRAIGHT? Then you’re in luck! Alex and Rorie are joined by bona fide movie guy Gary Whitta for an in-depth discussion on the just-announced Oscar noms, and he even sticks around for some Razzies discussion, user questions, and our classic movie talk on The Omen. TWO PLUS HOURS OF MOVIE-ORIENTED DISCUSSION. CATCH IT! (P.S.: Next week’s classic movie is Network–watch it!)
