CastMedium Podcast Awards 2010: Erik’s picks

by KirePDX in Features504 days ago

3)  Irrational Interviews I’ve said before that one of my favorite experiences is listening to smart people talk about smart things; and I realized this year that many of favorite shows provide this almost every week.  The Gianbomb, IGN, and other crews are all hilarious and entertaining; but really, they’re generally smart guys and girls who are talking on subjects they are passionate about.  However, Irrational Interviews made its focus on talking to a selection of leading representatives from a range of industries to take a broader look...

Weekend Confirmed Episode 1

by KirePDX in Blog, Games784 days ago

After six months away from the host chair, Garnett Lee is clearly excited to be at the helm of a new show, and Weekend Confirmed starts strong out of the gate.  Garnett borrows heavily from his time at 1up, bringing along the Whatcha’ Been Playin and the 4 Minute Warning segments, which only makes the show a better fit to fill the void left as 4Guys1Up figures itself out. Garnett is joined by Totally Rad Show’s Jeff Cannata and Shacknews’ Brian Leahy who strike a good balance of being entertaining and informative while keeping up the...

Three Red Lights, Episode 124

by KirePDX in Games994 days ago

Hilary Goldstein is out this week, so Erik Brudvig is hosting and starts with an interview with Travis Chen of Neversoft on the upcoming Guitar Hero 5.  Travis goes in-depth on the studio tools and options, which will be pretty powerful. In a bizarre experiment, the team calls TRL fans to ask Travis questions directly, and it actually goes pretty smoothly. Mass Effect: Pinnacle Station DLC appeared without warning this week, but it’s apparently a disappointing series of combat missions.  Even for $5, Erik says it’s not worth it. ...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Episode 122

by KirePDX in Games1009 days ago

Three Red Lights is a day late, but according to Hilary Goldstein, it’s a day better.  That doesn’t mean they cover many games this week, they do talk about Brave: A Warrior’s Tale and Shadow Complex; but the show ends with a 12 minute interview with Cobra Commander, who hasn’t been heard since episode 42. The guys are disappointed with the pricing of both the avatar marketplace and the Xbox Games on Demand, thinking Microsoft is charging too much to see what people are willing to pay.  While digital distribution seems...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 148

by KirePDX in Games1011 days ago

Sean and Shawn are back this week, but independent Swedish developer Eskil Steenberg really leads the show with interesting insights on next-gen motion controls, OnLive and game development. No new games covered this week; but Eskil has been trying out Red Faction: Guerrilla; which he thinks is a 7/10 game, but can’t stop playing.  It launches the discussion of flawed games that are impossible to put down, like Red Faction or Counterstrike, and ‘good’ games that no one finishes, like Okami or GTA IV. Eskil wonders if what gamers...

Giant Bombcast 08-11-2009

by KirePDX in Games1011 days ago

Jared Rea joins the Bombcast this week, and it’s surprising to find someone who knows as much about Street Fighter and arcade cabinets as Jeff Gerstmann.  So, it’s a half hour and a discussion on EVO tournament etiquette before they even get into current games. Everyone played Shadow Complex, the upcoming Xbox 360 Metroidvannia side-scroller, over the weekend and like it. Ryan polished off Prototype and thought more of story than Brad, while Vinny finally finished Fallout 3, but is now caught in the DLC. Jeff recently played some Command...

CO-OP | Episode 208 – The Typewriter

by KirePDX in Games1011 days ago

CO-OP isn’t known for its dance choreography, but the guys give a little song-and-dance at the start of this week’s episode; which is bookended with slightly stranger skits than usual. However, they find the time to revisit Gears of War 2 and Wipeout HD for some new DLC, and they have some fun with Fat Princess. When they can get past its server issues, Fat Princess is charming the group with its simple gameplay and great class-based design. While the basic mechanics are relatively simple, everyone is having fun discovering new capture-the-princess...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 130

by KirePDX in Games1015 days ago

It’s a slow news week, so Game Scoop! is pretty light on updates, but Levi Buchanan’s dramatic poetry reading during an adultery-preventing Knockin’ Boots segment makes it worth tuning in. TMNT: Turtles in Time came out for the Xbox Summer of Arcade, and doesn’t seem worth the $10 price tag; though Fallout 3′s Mothership Zeta DLC has a more positive reception. Atomic Games, developer of Six Days of Fallujah, laid off a significant part of its staff, sparking conversation on whether the game should ever come out. Also...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 147

by KirePDX in Games1017 days ago

GWJ is missing both Sean and Shawn this week, but a special community guest helps keep the show going as Julian Murdoch hosts and asks if editing tools and user generator content are asking too much from gamers. Since none of the GWJ crew has actually done any modding themselves, community member Todd Robinson, academic director of game design at the Art Institute of California, provides some good points on whether editing tools are a worthwhile investment for developers considering how few players use them, and if user generate content can actually...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 55

by KirePDX in Games1018 days ago

According to Command Prompt, a villain is just the hero for the other side, so they spend some time with the Empire for a potential TIE Fighter rerelease, and look at both the good and evil stories of Aion‘s world. LucasArts recently hinted at upcoming announcements about TIE Fighter, a beloved Star Wars space sim, and it has the PC crew excited for a remake or rerelease similar to what LucasArts has done for their other classic games. On the MMO front, Jason and Jeff Haynes have been playing Aion, an upcoming MMO from NCsoft. While there...

CO-OP | Episode 207 – Mother Mission’s Desserts

by KirePDX in Games1018 days ago

Warning: do not watch this episode while hungry. The CO-OP crew plays like it’s on the Food Network to show off some local San Francisco cuisine during the segment breaks, and it’s a little distracting.  In the three gaming segments, a diverse group of guests explore some classics reborn, including Space Invaders Infinity Gene for the iPhone, the new Monkey Islands, and the recent Ghostbusters game. Both the recent Monkey Island releases, the updated Secret of Monkey Island and the new Tales of Monkey Island, have received near-universal...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Episode 120

by KirePDX in Games1023 days ago

Even though Hilary is out this week, the TRL crew is still able to talk about cougars, 80′s pop culture, and do horrible impersonations while occasionally actually talking about 360 games.  There isn’t any agenda, and they cover a lot of random topics, but it’s an entertaining hour if you have the time. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is the only notable release for the 360 this week during its “Summer of Arcade” series.  But with the recent release of Blazblue, King of Fighters 12 and the older Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, none...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 146

by KirePDX in Games1024 days ago

This episode is an edited version of a live show from last Saturday that celebrated the three year anniversary of the Gamers with Jobs podcast.  In recognition, they revisited their first topic and discuss game violence while focusing on what has changed in three years; then they answer a number of questions from their live audience. After touching on the Madden 10 demo, and a few other games, they quickly dive into this week’s subject, game violence, to discover they don’t have as much to say as they did three years ago. The perceived...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 54

by KirePDX in Games1025 days ago

Command Prompt spends most of its hour answering the evergreen question: is PC gaming dead?  Sparked by a recent article from IGN Australia, the PC crew is quick to defend the platform and look to the future.  Not surprisingly, MMO’s come up a lot. Staci Krause was at the BioWare panel for The Old Republic at Comic-Con and came back disappointed that they didn’t share any new details.  At this point, BioWare has dropped a lot of hints, but provided very few facts about the game so the question comes up: did BioWare announce it too...

CO-OP | Episode 206 – The City Always Wins

by KirePDX in Games1026 days ago

CO-OP is only covering two games this week; and they assemble a full party to swap war stories about Battlefield 1943, and then sit a few guys down to talk about Wii Sports Resort. While Battlefield 1943 has had problems with matchmaking and its servers, everyone is having a lot of fun with this XBLA shooter with a focus on their fun experiences. Veteran Battlefield players will be familiar with the game style, but some of the newcomers to the series are discovering the charms of the game’s classes, vehicles and WWII setting. BitMob’s...
