8-4 Play may seem like a fairly conventional gaming podcast, and a lot of the time it is, but it has a unique spin to it; Japan. It’s rare that we get a glimpse into the Japanese side of gaming from people who actually live there. Often on gaming podcasts you will only hear 2nd hand information about gaming in Japan or very occasionally someone who has lived or is living in Japan will guest on a podcast and give their perspective. With the 8-4 team being based in Japan this is not the case for 8-4 Play.
Don’t let that scare you off though, if you aren’t especially interested in the Japanese side of the industry there’s still plenty of discussion of big western releases. With a cast that includes 1UP/EGM alums Mark Macdonald and John Riccardi the show can’t help but spark nostalgia of the late great podcasts that site once hosted. The spirit of those shows does appear to be alive and well in 8-4 Play, with a light hearted atmosphere that goes surprisingly well with in-depth and interesting discussions.
The one slight disappointment I have with the show is the fact there is very little discussion of 8-4′s localisation work. This is somewhat understandable as they are often under strict orders not to disclose what they are working on. And by the time we see the fruits of their labor they are onto the next super-secret project. They have mentioned however that they are interested in discussing this topic so it is likely they will dedicate some time to it in the future.
This is an easy listen, with it’s combination of western game discussion and unique insight into Japanese games and culture. Heck if these guys can keep me engaged with a near two hour episode dedicated to Monster Hunter, a series I have never played, then they must be doing something right.
