This week’s episode starts with an interesting twenty-minute debate regarding the merits of Guitar Hero vs Rock Band, and the future of music games in general. Jeff’s been playing Enslaved, and is pleasantly surprised by the production value and fun factor. Brian seems pretty underwhelmed by Dead Rising 2, and Garnett gives some insight on Front Mission Evolved.
Brian actually suggests a game for Cannata-ford this week – Super Mega Worm for iOS devices. Garnett thinks everyone should play Planescape Torment, and Jeff kinda sorta recommends UFO On Tape, another iOS game.
The big discussion this week starts with the depth and importance (or lack thereof) of the lore behind the Halo franchise. Jeff presses Garnett to essentially explain why he should care about Halo’s characters or plot, while Brian casually discards the conversation, as Halo is fundamentally a great action shooter. The guys move into their opinions on HD remakes vs re-imaginings or reboots.
The biggest news item this week is the release date and price of the Nintendo 3DS in Japan (no details yet on a U.S. release). Brian also covers Gears of War 3 being delayed and positioned as the flagship holiday release in 2011, and Valve jumping on the micro-transaction bandwagon with TF2.
New releases continue to descend with a fury giving Garnett, Brian, and Jeff a plethora of games to cover. This week’s highlights in Whatcha Been Playin include Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, Enslaved, Dead Rising 2, Front Mission Evolved, and more. Your responses on the importance of story to Halo: Reach and the struggles of Japanese developers get things started in the Warning before giving way to zombies and whether we really need all these HD remakes. And there’s a wealth of news in the Front Page as well with the announcement of 3DS launch details for Japan, Gears of War 3 getting delayed, Valve bringing microtransactions to Team Fortress 2, and that’s just the beginning.
