Weekend Confirmed Episode 24

Weekend Confirmed

This week’s Weekend Confirmed is absolutely packed, despite being down one member.  With Brian sick, its Garnett and Jeff touching on all manner of content, starting with Whatcha Been Playin?  They spread the wealth this week, talking about Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, Shogun 2, Mafia 2, Sonic Riders for Kinect, and F1 2010.  Garnett gives a quick teaser for the upcoming Borderlands DLC and Jeff explains his new favorite boardgame Cutthroat Caverns.

The Warning gives us the third week of discussion surrounding shooting in games and potential for new mechanics.  Serious games with “gamey” elements (ie. thermos collection in Allen Wake) is given some attention and Jeff convinces Garnett that game studios shouldn’t make movies.  In other news, AMD is dropping ATI in favor of Radeon as a video card brand, the FFXIV open beta continues to have issues, and the Nintendo DS is poised for a price drop.

After the shock of Sony’s dominance at Gamescom, the guys defend the perceived U.S. bias towards XBox 360.  Essentially they blame the early release and the success of XBox Live for such notions.

Apple stirred things up this week by essentially diving into the serious portable game equation, with the A4 chipset and Gamecenter.  Sony appears ready for disappointment in the success of Move and 3D, and Microsoft introduced a new Xbox 360 controller and a higher Xbox Live price to boot.

Man Down! Brian misses his first episode with a summer cold leaving Jeff and Garnett to do their morning show duo impersonation for this week’s show. They don’t miss a beat getting right into Whatcha Been Playin? with Shogun 2, Mafia 2, Sonic Riders for kinect, and F1 2010. Last week’s topic of shooting as the dominant mechanic in modern videogames struck a chord with the community and gets the Warning off to a flying start. Whether “gamey” elements break serious games and how we feel about game developers becoming movie makers takes the discussion to this week’s music break featuring “Over” produced by So Flawless. And yes, Microsoft’s decision to raise the price on its Live service gets into the Front Page along with loads of other news like a price drop on Nintendo’s handhelds and the end of the ATI era.
