Mobcast 68: Best/Worst In-Game Weapons, Real-Life Wars in Video Games, and More

Mobcast

A short episode this week — forty minutes of Bitmob’s Shoe and Demian, joined by Area 5′s Matt Chandronait and GameXplain’s Andre Segers.

The first topic is a serious one — the treatment of modern warfare in games. Medal of Honor has caught flack for featuring the Taliban, and Six Days in Fallujah was dropped by publisher Konami for daring to deal with a war that isn’t over yet.

Next, they talk about what makes games immersive. Although Andre and Matt like cohesive universes and good stories, they spend as much time talking about control mechanics and user-interface design.

Lightening the mood, they name game weapons they’d like to own, and which they’d least like to be on the other end of. I don’t think the Portal gun counts as a weapon though.

They quickly wrap up by discussing pricing. $60 is a lot to spend, but games have cost that much for decades. With indie games and Steam offering low-price alternatives, nobody can spirit up a dissenting view here.

Covered topics: Games’ treatment of conflict, immersion, weapons, games’ prices.

In this week’s Mobcast, Area 5′s Matt Chandronait and GameXplain.com‘s Andre Segers join Bitmob’s Dan Hsu and Demian Linn on the latest and greatest Mobcast.

On this week’s show, the group discusses what factors make for an immersive experience, which video-game weapons they’d like to own (and which ones they’d hate to be on the wrong end of), the high price tags of current-gen retail releases, and whether or not ongoing real-world military conflicts are too sensitive for developers to base their products around.

Here’s a link to the article that Shoe references in the show.
