Scott Sharkey and Travis Williams join Kat for the first segment of this weeks show to discuss the announcement that Cryptic is working on some kind of reboot of Neverwinter. Travis is a big D&D nerd and really enjoyed the Neverwinter Nights game so he’s excited but there’s alot of skepticism about whether Cryptic can make a good game, let alone a non-MMO game.
Ray Barnholt, Jeremy Parish and special guest Christian Nutt join Kat for the rest of the episode, starting with the second segment in which they discuss Ys Seven. The guys reflect a bit on the Ys series as a whole and ponder the upcoming releases from Xseed. Christian is enjoying the traditional Ys gameplay but has some pretty strong feelings about the insultingly bad storytelling in the game which is likened by the others to a Nick Jr show.
The final segment is a discussion of Tactical/Strategy RPGs, just what is the term? No one can really answer that but they go on to discuss the genre(s?) at length. Anyone who has heard Kat on a podcast in the last year or so will know she’s a huge fan of Valkyria Chronicles so this of course gets lots of mentions. The Final Fantasy Tactics games get discussed also with Jeremy explaining why he dislikes the GBA and DS versions of the game so much. An interesting discussion and a good listen if you are a relatively new fan of the genre who is looking for recommendations.
Tactical RPGs? Strategy RPGs? Whichever is the proper term, Kat, Jeremy, Ray and special guest Christian Nutt sit down to discuss the ups and downs of one of the nerdiest RPG subgenres. The crew also takes a look at the recently-released Ys Seven, but not before Travis Williams and Scott Sharkey stop by to share their thoughts on the recently-announced Neverwinter reboot by Cryptic. It’s an episode so huge that we go ten full minutes over our usual runtime.
