/Filmcast Ep. 112 – Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Jeff Cannata of the Totally Rad Show joins the crew for this week’s episode of the /Filmcast, starting off with Sundance favorite Catfish. Devindra shares his impressions of Batman: Under the Red Hood, which axes the lighthearted approach to Batman and revives the heavier tone of The Animated Series or even Batman Beyond. He also highlights the new voice talent, which deviates from the typical Kevin Conroy/Mark Hamill pairing of Batman and Joker and adopts Bruce Greenwood and John Di Maggio.

The news segment is dominated by the recent remarks of Gary Kurtz, the producer of Star Wars: A New Hope and Empire Strikes back. In many more words, he essentially asserts that George Lucas shed his artistic vision for Star Wars in favor for the capitalistic motivation to make money from related toys. This clearly brings out some demons about the general contempt for Lucas after releasing the prequel trilogy, resulting in a very spirited debate.

Jeff delivers a very interesting forward to this week’s review of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, remarking on the film’s ability to take the comic book medium and celebrate it with a great sense of style. Adam was even more impressed, praising the execution of Edgar Wright as both a storyteller and director (even going as far as to say SPvTW could land in his top ten of all time). Devindra and Dave are the most critical of the film, citing the relationship between Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) and Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) as fairly weak with respect to the protagonists in Wright’s previous work and ultimately failing in building the stakes in the film.
