Active Time Babble

It’s been a pretty big year for RPGs, heck the existence of this podcast can attest to that, but the year isn’t over quite yet! There are still plenty of RPGs to come over the last few months of this year and that is the subject for this weeks episode of ATB.

First up though is some recent RPG news, starting with the announcement of Double Fine’s next game Costume Quest. After having a go at real time strategy with Brutal Legend the developer is now giving the RPG genre a try and a more old school approach to boot. This is going to be a turn based affair, complete with menus for selecting actions in battles, the ATB ccast have high hopes for the game which is most likely hitting downloadable services around Halloween. A favourite among the CastMedium crew Torchlight is getting itself a sequel, there doesn’t seem to be much info about the game however. The main change will be co-op, possibly the most asked for feature in the first game, that is enough to cause some excitement though.

Kat makes the observation that the end of this year is fairly MMO heavy, with the behemoth that will be World of Warcraft: Cataclysm launching. Considering it’s very close to release there doesn’t seem to be much buzz for DC Universe Online, the fact it will be on console (PS3) too though gives it the opportunity to make a splash. Another MMO coming to console is Final Fantasy XIV, although again there isn’t alot known about it considering it will be out in a few months.

Fallout New Vegas is pretty highly antcipated, especially by Scooter who is a pretty big fan of Obsidians works, despite the fact it’s often buggy or in some cases unfinished. Most of the cast are fans of Fable and looking forward to Fable 3, although Scooter is very curious about the second half of the game which will take place after you become King of Albion.

It’s August, which is when the first of the big holiday releases traditionally begin to arrive. Kat, Thierry, Ray and Alice parse the rest of the year’s releases so you don’t have to, featuring discussion of everything from World of WarCraft: Cataclysm to Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light. Also discussed is Tim Schafer’s new RPG, the surprise Torchlight II announcement and whether or not the world is ready for more EverQuest. Super bonus: The bass is back!
