/Filmcast Ep. 111 – The Other Guys

by Jon Cole in Movies, TVAugust 11th, 2010 @ 10:23 pm
/Filmcast

This week’s /Filmcast starts off with a little Party Down inspired “What We’ve Been Watching”, with Dave’s impressions of a series of live-action shorts on Adult Swim called Childrens Hospital which stars many Party Down actors. Devindra takes it yet another step farther, discussing his recent rewatching of Veronica Mars on Netflix Instant View and how well the series holds up over time. The segment closes out with Adam’s thoughts on the Blu-Ray version of Kick-Ass and its focus on Matthew Vaughn’s vision for the film.

The news segment is almost wholly devoted to Tony Scott news, first off with his attatchment to Mark Millar’s Nemesis. While Mark Millar had some recent success in the film world with some of his concepts, nobody seems to be optimistic about the union of Millar’s poor writing and Tony Scott’s recent poor execution in films like Pelham 1 2 3. Tony Scott also isn’t gaining many fans on the /Filmcast with his recent trailer for Unstoppable, though Chris Pine’s participation in the project did pique a little interest.

The Other Guys is the subject of this week’s review and it’s clear right from the beginning that everyone had a great time with it. Will Ferrell doesn’t play his typical role, with Wahlberg actually taking the role of the loud, over the top guy while Ferrell is a little more restrained. While the first half of the film was fairly well executed, Dave makes the point that the last act tries to catch up with the shoestring plot in a very clumsy way.

Covered films and topics: Children’s Hospital, Veronica Mars, Kick-Ass Blu-ray, Matthew Vaughn agreed to direct X-Men because superhero movies will be dead soon, Tony Scott attached to direct Mark Millar’s Nemesis, Trailer for Tony Scott’s Unstoppable, The Other Guys, Eric D. Snider joins us

This week, David Chen, Devindra Hardawar, and Adam Quigley express little hope for Tony Scott’s Unstoppable, chat about the special features on the Kick-Ass Blu-Ray, and discuss the end of the superhero movie. Special guest Eric D. Snider joins us from film.com and Cinematical.
