After a one-week hiatus due to Comic-Con, the /Filmcast returns to report their time there. However, things start off as usual with “What We’ve Been Watching”, which is largely dominated by recent films like Dinner for Schmucks and Sorcerer’s Apprentice as well as a fair amount of television. Devindra particularly weighs in on Covert Affairs, a new USA show produced by Doug Liman which channels shows like Alias except without the sci-fi elements.
The news segment is totally dominated by Comic-Con, with Russ beginning the conversation by stating his disdain for the marketing driven nature of this year’s show. They hit on quite a few highlights of the show, including the Green Lantern panel, the Walking Dead trailer, the Are You Afraid of the Dark? footage, and the Scott Pilgrim public premiere.
The show closes out with a review of Bong Joon-ho’s latest film, Mother, which recently released on DVD. They all agree that all of his movies have something totally unique to offer on several levels, including visual style and plot. Dave and Devindra agree that the score adds yet another atmospheric, subtle layer of dread atop the cinematography. Ultimately, it’s clear that Mother will earn a top spot in the /Filmcast crew’s best films of the year.
