The Idle Thumbs Podcast Episode 9: Rolling With the Pope

by Jonathan Downin in GamesJuly 17th, 2010 @ 5:16 pm

This one starts with the revelation that Chris has not seen the movie, The Wizard– incredible. Starting the games talk, Chris spends 20 minutes on Assassin’s Creed 2. Not many emergent moments were spawned, but he seems to have enjoyed some of the more ridiculous mechanics at play. Portal 2 gets just a few minutes before Chris shares some love for Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands.

Famous talks about how great Snoopy’s Flying Ace is, but never really manages to get the guys to take him seriously. Chris explains his affection for the infinitely ridiculous Driver San Francisco, and then touches back on Alpha Protocol and why he is okay about plans for a sequel falling though due to poor sales. A few words of disappointment about Crackdown 2 and some details about the PAX Prime panel finish the show.

Covered games and topics: Assassin’s Creed 2, Portal 2, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Snoopy’s Flying Ace, Driver San Francisco, Alpha Protocol, Crackdown 2

In video games, you can trust no one. Everyone is in on it, everyone but you. In video games nothing is real. Or, if it is, we’re pretty sure you’re seeing it via the visions of a comatose police officer, through the projection of genetic memories hurtled into your brain through time at tremendous speed, or in the dreams of a sleeping cartoon dog. With special guest Sean Vanaman.

  1. Alistair says:

"Famous" is fine and holding his own (did Hot Scoops quit?) still the most impromptu fun silly rewarding podcast, great flow, great game stories

  2. Chris's nigh incoherent rant against AC2 was pretty off-putting and not his usual style. He rambled on and on about aspects of AC2 that he didn't like, I guess, even though his points were really weak and it seemed like he didn't feel strongly about it one way or the other but felt he needed to speak emphatically. Really gross way to start the show.

    • Chris Remo says:

      Alfred,

My AC2 points were observations, not judgments. I don't have a strong opinion about whether I really liked or really disliked the game as a whole, but I definitely had very specific experiences that I wanted to convey. At this point I'm largely over the notion of passing a definitive judgment on a game, and am much more interested in passing along thoughts I had about them. I'm pretty sure everything I said about AC2 is pretty concretely backed up by my actual experience in the game.

  3. Awww crap. I feel like a big jerk now because I didn't expect you to be reading this and I'm actually a big fan of the show. I hope you weren't personally offended. I'm really sorry if I came off like a troll. god damn it i love the show sorry man

  4. Alistair says:

I think Chris does tend to ramble and maybe it's a put-off if you don't have the same experience or it sounds negative, but this podcast is the best at just sharing experiences about games and telling game stories. Episode 10's Moonbase Alpha/Transformice/Famous's roommate's impression of Far Cry 2 were classic. This show is succeding where Jeff and Ryan of Bombcast have started failing lately IMO, simple sharing experiences of games and dumb jokes and having a fun time with video games

  5. Chris Remo says:

    Alfred,

No worries; it takes more than that to personally offend me. I did want to explain where I was coming from, though. As a game journalist, I've noticed almost every kind of content about games can be interpreted as a review–I've even had commenters refer to interviews I've done as "reviews," which blows my mind. As such, since I am not (and have never really been) a reviewer, I do like to try and distance myself from having my thoughts on games be construed as appraisals.
