Mobcast 58: E3 2010 Special: 3D Gaming, Notable No-Shows, Surprises, and More

Mobcast

The Mobcast took a week off for some small indie trade show called the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Host Shoe has brought back old friends Shane Bettenhausen (Ignition Entertainment), Mark MacDonald (8-4, Ltd.), and John Ricciardi (also of 8-4) to talk about the show.

They start with pleasant surprises, including Twisted Metal and the 3DS line-up in general. Mark talks about Battle Tag — Ubisoft’s laser-tag, not-a-video-game thing — although this may have been sarcasm.

Next, they shine a light on some of the under-covered games of the conference. Shoe played some Kirby’s Epic Yarn for the Wii, which interestingly brings its aesthetic and gameplay together. They also mention Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and Child of Eden.

3D was a big part of Sony’s show this year, and achievement-strumpet Shoe sounds like he’s going to be playing multi-platform games on the PS3 from now on. Apart from John, whose eyes aren’t compatible with the technology, they sound impressed by Sony and Nintendo’s 3D games.

Notably not-shown in LA last week was Nintendo’s pulse-reading Vitality Sensor. They speculate as to why it — along with Respawn Entertainment and a price for Kinect — were absent.

Finally, they answer a question from the audience — which past E3 demos looked good but turned out otherwise? Shoe tells the sad story of Dark Rain 2, and they mention some titles that won awards at E3s but got bad reviews.

Covered topics: Twisted Metal, 3DS, Battle Tag, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, PS3 in 3D, Wii Vitality Sensor, Kinect.

Shane Bettenhausen, Mark MacDonald, and John Ricciardi join Bitmob’s Dan Hsu on a special E3/1UP-EGM Reunion show.

Sparks fly as the gang discusses games that wowed them at E3, but later disappointed, whether or not the world’s ready for 3D, pleasant surprises on the show floor, under-the-radar games, and notable E3 no-shows.
