Weekend Confirmed Episode 13

by Jonathan Downin in GamesJune 18th, 2010 @ 8:01 pm
weekendconfirmed

It’s the big E3 wrap-up show and even at over 2 1/2 hours Garnett and crew don’t manage to hit everything. Rock Band 3 is up first and it is high on everyones list of games they saw at E3– poor Power Gig. Kinect and Move get a good chunk of time with the group seemingly much more excited about the potential of Kinect. Special guest N’Gai Croal shares his love for Dance Central with Child of Eden garnering universal excitement.

X-COM made a good first impression, but the shooting mechanic and enemy design didn’t follow through for the guys. Homefront and Red Faction Armageddon sound like they are on the right track, and everyone loves Portal 2. That Game Company’s latest, Journey, looks like it will be another simple, yet artfully affective experience from the people behind Flower. Excitement for Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Civilization V end the show.

Look for more E3 discussion in part 2 next week.

Covered games and topics: Rock Band 3, Power Gig, DJ Hero 2, Kinect and PS Move, 3DS, 3D, Child of Eden, Dance Central, X-COM, Homefront, Red Faction Armageddon, Portal 2, PixelJunk Shooter 2, Journey, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Civ V

E3 2010 goes into the books with a deluge of games and we dive right into the deep end of them. Shacknews’s own Chris Faylor joins Garnett, Brian, and Jeff to share their experiences with XCOM, Portal 2, Bulletstorm, Child of Eden, Journey, PixelJunk Shooter 2, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, DJ Hero 2, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, LittleBIGPlanet 2, the Witcher 2, and more.  N’Gai Croal also takes a turn on the microphone to examine the big trends of 3D gaming and motion control seen at the show. With far more than fits in one show this show ends with a “to be continued” next week. Along with more games we’ll also share your responses to E3 and the games so come by Shacknews for the official show thread to join the conversation.

"The one thing that worries me about Kinect, it's supposed to make gaming more accessible right? I mean it's supposed to be a new control device and the thing that really speaks to me is the legions of disabled gamers out there right? The people that can't hold a controller, that can't use a controller, the people in wheelchairs, and now we can't use it sitting down?"
Thats an actual quote from the last Weekend Confirmed that I will ever listen to. I haven't really been digging the show anyway, and this is a perfect example of WC taking shit too seriously.

I don't know who said that as I haven't had time to listen to this yet, but I pretty much agree. Garnett really bugs me quite often with his overactive devil's advocating. He loves to advocate not for the devil that speaks for the arguments we don't want to hear because they're not what we like, instead for the devil that speaks for the arguments that are completely pedantic.

Nonetheless, I can kinda feel out when those moments are coming and block them out to bring down my frustration. But it's silly things like that which make me really enjoy podcasts like Giant Bomb, where I feel like I'm listening into a really interesting conversation rather than the podcasters just talking AT me.

I agree with everything you said. I wanted to say the same thing but I'm really bad at expressing myself.

      • TJ0 says:

Haha that happens to me with brian leahy, I mean yes you like MS but damn son give nintendo and sony a break

I hadn't heard any of Garnett's previous work, he definitely irked me during the first episodes of this. I'm coming around. The commercials are bullshit (first rule of podcasting do music breaks if you have to but no commercials for fucksake) but he's a talented host, he keeps it moving even when he's just lazy advocating. Really growing into this show. Seems like a good guest pool even if Garnett is too hosty or fakey sometimes

    • JonCole says:

I really don't think that no commercials is the first rule of podcasting, let alone a rule of podcasting at all. It may irk some people, but I never really find commercials bad unless they completely dominate the duration of the program. It must not be a huge mistake, as every show on the TWiT network, every show on the ThisWeekIn network (Jason Calicanis's latest project), CNet's Buzz Out Loud podcast, Weekend Confirmed, and This American Life all have commercial breaks.

  3. Matthew Floratos says:

I actually really like commercials. It gives it a more "radio" vibe. And it also gains podcasters money. All podcasts should run Audible adds. I don't have any problem with them.

No offense guy but I don't understand how anyone could think this way. These are podcasts. This is internet radio. This is not bullshit radio/tv. The fun free honest conversation from every show on this site is video games, video games, if you enjoy ads and commercials and corporate sponsorship go hang out under gametrailers and G4TV

    • JonCole says:

      *Free for listeners.

Producing podcasts and putting them on the internet costs content creators time and money. And honestly, "bullshit radio/tv" is dense with commercials to a much more significant extent than these podcasts.

The truth is, very few people who produce quality content do it for free. Whether it's through donation or advertisement, the money has to come from somewhere.

    • Matthew Floratos says:

@Alistair So you essentially think that people should produce free content for you, deliver it to you, and not get anything out of it themselves.

To stop you short of building a straw man, what I believe is that podcasters should run as many advertisements as they need in order to help them make some sort of income from their show which they invest this amount of time into: (and having done my own podcast for about 25 episodes, I think I can give a tiny bit of insight into)

-> Hours of planning (for my topic based podcast it was 3 to 4 hours weekly)
      -> Hours of recording
-> Hours of editing, not counting when computers (software like Audacity) or recording equipment fail and you have to do stuff over again
-> Time spent building websites, running and maintaining servers (or paying for that privilege) and uploading content

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding you, but you want "no commercials for fucksake". How do you propose podcasters get money out of what they're doing in order to support themselves and compensate themselves for all their time and money that they're putting into their jobs for YOU. The nature of how listeners get their podcasts (through RSS feeds and automatic downloaders) means that web-based advertisements typically never run. So what's the best way of getting some compensation?

How about running a thirty second advertisement before and after the show finishes, like Dan Carlin does on his fantastic shows (http://www.dancarlin.com) (sorry for the plug, but this guy really does, in my opinion, the best two podcasts on the internet) or like Garnett does on Weekend Confirmed? God forbid they run a third advertisement during the show, which only takes up another thirty seconds, to try and make some more money, so they can CONTINUE WHAT THEY'RE DOING.

No offense, guy, but I enjoy podcasters making money so that they can continue producing content that I like. That's what I enjoy. Because I would like to hear more of them, not less.

  5. TJ0 says:

No prob for me, as long as its interesting commercials are a breeze!

  6. Alistair says:

Floratos, I know my way around time and economics and podcasts. I'm not familiar with your show; I have edited failed podcasts, however. They didn't fail for lack of commercials. If that's your fail, sorry you?

Again, I'm for real conversation. Podcast isn't commercial radio, its for fun and free and smart, intelligent people talking together. This site is great at sharing and summarizing good shows. It's not easy. It's not your bullshit. These shows, mostly the best, are doing it because they want to. They do it because they care about it and are good at it, not for money or ego or anyone else's enjoyment.

    Especially yours.

  7. TJ0 says:

Well I just wish Shane Bettenhausen still did a weekly podcast, I would pay for that haha
