Giant Bombcast 05-18-2010

by Derek Lavigne in Games619 days ago

The guys are running a three man show this week with Jeff out of the office on a super-secret project. Aside from some cooking stories, Vinny hasn’t been playing a whole lot outside of a small bit of Damnation of all things, which he says is easily in the running for the worst game he’s ever played. Brad has also been focusing his time and mostly only playing Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands which he thinks does a lot to bring the series back to what people expect, but could have been much better. Ryan though has been playing a...

at1UP

at1UP: 05/18/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games, TV619 days ago

Get ready for a full 15 minute prologue about comic stores. Alan starts the regular show with a bit of insight into what’s going on with 1UP SuperGuides recently, and the discussion moves on to impressions and stories aout Red Dead Redemption. This is one of the few mainstream games that all of the at1UP crew seems to be into, so it must be good. There is a Zombie Action News segment this week with Travis talking about the BBC reality/zombie show, Dead Set. It sounds like an interesting mashup of genres, and it is free on Youtube. Jade recommends a...

The HotSpot

The HotSpot 05/18/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games619 days ago

It’s a short HotSpot this week with sickness and scheduling conflicts cited as issues. Justin is in the process od reviewing Red Dead Redemption, and he is enjoying it a lot. It sounds like Rockstar have a much stronger take on multiplayer here than they did with GTA4. Prince of Persia also comes off fairly well, and manages a 7.5 from Tom. The April NPDs were quite weak, and Microsoft VP let it slip that Project Natal will come out in October. After the usual 10 Years Ago feature, Brendan interview the author of video game history book The...

CastMedium Podcast 036 – 05.18.10

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, Tech619 days ago

After a faulty start, the recent formerly 4 Guys kicks-off the conversation and then we get into a 15+ minutes discussion on EA’s new Online Pass. The conversation hits the topic from a lot of different angles, and we all have something to say about publishers incentivizing new game purchases. Let us know what you think in the comments. After ripping into Lost Planet 2, which admittedly none of us have played, Erik tells us about the gdgt Chicago event. The show closes with talk of the new screened.com. And it is confirmed, Shawn Andrich from...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 165: Fat & Sassy

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies619 days ago

Indifference is probably the best way to describe how the TRS crew feel about Ridley Scott‘s take on Robin Hood. While all of them agree it is a very well made film they also think it’s missing a certain something. Max von Sydow gets praised for his apparent standout performance in the movie with Dan also citing a specific scene by Cate Blanchett as a highlight. The guys certainly recommend the movie but there’s no real excitement for it. Derrick Comedy the group behind Mystery Team take part in this weeks “Game with fame”...

Mobcast 54: CO-OP on Co-op

by Alex Martin in Games619 days ago

Ryan O’Donnell and Cesar Quintero of Area 5 media, producers of CO-OP, are hosted by Bitmobbers Demian and Brett. Appropriately, the theme for this episode is co-operative gaming and Demian starts with his topic — games the panel only plays co-operatively. Some games are just better when you have friends there with you, like Phantasy Star Online, which Ryan seems to think is the same offline as on, but is transformed when your friends are there to check out your loot. Ryan has a cool idea — more games should have two-part weapons...

Filmspotting #301: Iron Man 2 / Sunset Blvd. / Top 5 Summer Movie Preview

by Jon Cole in Movies620 days ago

Filmspotting is back to regularly scheduled programming this week, visiting the mainstream side of the tracks with their review of Iron Man 2.  They start off with the things the like about the film, namely the performance of Garry Shandling and the way that Jon Faveau handles the camera in action scenes.  Beyond that, they have little else good to say.  The film felt too jokey about scenes where the situation should have been far more dire, exacerbated by the overindulgence of Robert Downey Jr.  The sheer number of characters didn’t...

Player One Podcast – Episode 186 (05/17/10) – Full of Dots

by Ross Adams in Games621 days ago

Last weeks episode is now a “lost” episode with it being declared too bad to publish. Things are back to normal though with the show getting derailed before the introdcutions are even finished. CJ makes mention of a Mega Man MMO that may be in the works, leading to a short discussion about why the guys just aren’t likley to play an MMO of any kind. The game discussion this week is dominated by 3D Dot Game Heroes, which all 3 hosts have been playing this week. The game allows you to create a custom character in the pixelart style,...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 163

by Jon Cole in Games621 days ago

Game Scoop! starts off covering the NPD’s, which are quite uninteresting on multiple levels.  News that the PS2 will no longer continue to be tracked by the NPD group isn’t particularly surprising for anyone and the predictability continues with the newfound success of Splinter Cell: Conviction. EA’s new Online Pass program has been faced with lots of controversy, which is reflected by the complete divergence between Daemon and Greg in favor and Charles and Hilary in opposition.  Daemon makes the apt comparison to the Cerberus...

Engadget Podcast

Engadget Podcast 196 – 05.14.2010

by Jon Cole in Tech622 days ago

Android news essentially dominates the first half of this week’s Engadget show, for several good reasons.  Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ details have slowly leaked out through sites like TechCrunch, revealing both tethering and wi-fi hotspot features.  These features sound great, but their true implementation may not be as peachy as expected, with Sprint saying they’ll charge extra for similar features on their upcoming HTC EVO 4G.  Nilay insists that these price hikes don’t spell well for the EVO, while Josh and Paul argue...

Joystiq Podcast 138 – The Real Monsters edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games622 days ago

It’s clear that the guys had some technical issues with these week’s episode. They alude to rerecording the show a couple of time and Justin is traded-out for Griffin at about the 30 minute mark. Ludwig starts the game talk with Rocket Knight. Justin gets into his experience with the iPad after getting a demo unit from Apple. He has been playing Mirror’s Edge and enjoying his time with it, calling himself “won over.”Chris is still trudging through Final Fantasy XIII, but he is most excited to talk about Steam for Mac,...

Retronauts

Retronauts Episode 92: 05/13/2010

by Ross Adams in Games622 days ago

There is a distinct lack of retro news and releases lately so this weeks episode opens with some lamenting of that fact. The guys briefly talk about what little news there is, including Earthworm Jim on DSi, Game Rooms latest releases and Steam on Mac bringing Lucasarts adventure games with it. The first of two main segments has Frank Cifaldi going over a feature he’s been running on 1UP, reporting on the new from 20 years ago. The segment is mostly taken up by Frank going over the events followed by some brief discussion and often contension...

Rebel FM

Rebel FM Episode 62 – 05/13/10

by Alex Martin in Games623 days ago

After the worst podcast introduction ever Anthony, Arthur, Tyler and semi-regular Matt get into the games they’ve been playing. Anthony and Matt start by comparing Bullet Storm to Pain Killer and Burnout. The combo system sounds more like an extreme sports game though. Arthur loved the choice of song for the Alan Wake end credits but raised an eyebrow at the strange ending. He also continues the Lost Planet 2 hate but enjoyed some Split Second. A lot of the staff at Black Rock used to work for Criterion, so it’s got a distinctly Burnout...

Weekend Confirmed Episode 8

by Alex Martin in Games623 days ago

Comedian Christian Spicer joins regular Confirmers of Weekends Garnett, Jeff, and Brian. (Billy has moved on to a new job at EGM.) This week Jeff’s been playing action RPG Nier, which is “more fun than it is good”. He and Garnett did not like Lost Planet 2 and the changes that were meant to address the first game’s flaws. Christian has mixed thoughts on ModNation Racers for the PSP, which isn’t optimized for the PSP’s analogue nub. Games they more whole-heartedly endorse include Skate 3, Super Street Fighter 4,...

/Filmcast Ep. 99 – Iron Man 2

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV623 days ago

This week, Dave got a chance to check out Die Hard With a Vengeance, which everyone agrees is one of the better films in the series.  Samuel L. Jackson’s performance garners a great response from both Dave and Devindra due to both his hilarious “reverse racist” lines and interactions with Bruce Willis’s John McClane.  The first segment wraps up with Adam checking in on Community, an NBC show that seems to have carried the torch from a brilliant pilot into a solid series. News that David O. Russell is being scoped out to...
