With Phil Kollar at the reigns this week, Jeff Cork comes into the studio to talk a little bit about the development process of the upcoming Toy Story 3 game and why you should care about it. Avalanche Software takes the idea of a movie-tie in game into a completely different direction than most games of that subgenre, namely creating an open-world, sandbox-style game type that Jeff describes as somewhat similar to Rare’s recent offerings like Viva Pinata.
Matt Bertz joins Phil in the second segment to talk about FEAR 3, starting off with Phil’s disappointment in Monolith for not heading up this new installation in the series. The game touts a cooperative play mode for the campaign, featuring a psychic-powered second character with special, plot-driven abilities that optimistically promise a lot of replay value. FEAR 3 does offer a standard single-player campaign, though Matt admits that the co-op sounds much more promising for the final product.
The final segment features Tim Turi, who got a chance to check out some Capcom games at the Captivate event in Hawaii. Okamiden, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 garner the most fanfare, but Tim manages to hit on a couple more interesting titles before the end of this week’s podcast.
With host Matt Helgeson out, I invite Jeff Cork onto the show to explain why we should be interested in the game based on Pixar’s Toy Story 3. After that, Matt Bertz takes the guest chair to spill the beans on F.E.A.R. 3, the first main game in the franchise that will be developed by someone other than Monolith. We discuss the potential good points of the upcoming game and also some aspects that have us a bit worried. For the final segment, a freshly-tanned Tim Turi tells all about his trip to Hawaii and the various Capcom games he saw there — including Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
