The Mobcast for this week marks yet another podcast in David Ellis’s final crusade before diving deep into the dark side at 343 Industries. First up is Shoe’s topic, asking what life after games journalism might be like, which is particularly interesting given the diverse paths each of the guys took to get into the industry.
Very few developers have found widespread success with multiplayer, with much of the attention focused on games like Call of Duty and Halo. Most of the guys agree that most of this failure can be attributed to shoehorning into an otherwise campaign-minded game, with the primary example being Condemned 2.
The show wraps up with Aaron’s topic, asking the crew what their most memorable video game sound effects are. He starts off mentioning all of the sounds of Pac-Man, with specific focus on death sound of game’s protagonist. Dan highlights the all-too popular Nintendo keychains that you can buy in Japan that make Mario sound effects, which just about anyone can recognize.
Covered games and topics: Game novelizations and expansion of canon, Blizzard/Bioware’s lore, Halo Legends, Starcraft II, 1UPocalypse, Splinter Cell multiplayer, Crackdown 2, Uncharted 2 multiplayer success, Farmville/Mafia Wars, various SNES games with fantastic sound effects, Doom
Industry veterans John Keefer (Crispy Gamer, GameSpy, EGM) and David Ellis (1up) join Bitmob’s Dan Hsu and Aaron Thomas to talk developers’ focus on multiplayer, social games killing hardcore games, life after games journalism, and the best sound effects of all time.
