Filmspotting rocks out this week with a review of The Runaways, the tale of the rapid rise and fall of the 70′s all-girl rock band of the same name. As always, the discussion starts off with a lofty question, namely asking whether or not the performances of Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie are going to be remembered ten years from now. Matty answers with a fairly disappointing answer, giving a little bit of credit to Fanning but ultimately declaring that their poor performances brought no spirit to the film. Adam does praise Michael Shannon’s performance as the manic, crazy band manager Kim Fowley. However, Matty essentially wraps up the review by totally grilling the terrible dialogue and total lack of character chemistry.
After a positive review of the last film in their Ernst Lubitsch marathon, To Be or Not To Be, the show wraps with Adam and Matty’s top five actresses of the decade. Adam and Matty agree that there are few actresses that really have the makings to deserve such a place on such a vaunted list and they further agree that Meryl Streep is such a defining presence that she earns a place in the pantheon of actresses. With some huge talent like Catherine Keener, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Naomi Watts, and Kate Winslet backing their lists, this week’s lists and poll are sure to dust up a lot of interesting conversation.
