The Geekbox: Episode 57

by Jon Cole in Games, Movies, TVMarch 16th, 2010 @ 11:38 pm
The Geekbox

The Geekbox returns to some form of normalcy this week, featuring the normal crew minus Karen Chu.  The episode kicks off with some discussion of the latest Ben-centric episode of Lost, Dr. Linus.  Higgins has the dissenting opinion, not really liking the episode due to what he says is poor character development.  Ryan Scott and Mike agree that the latest episode actually wraps up one of the best character arcs in the whole show, so the argument gets a little heated with such opposing opinions.

Alice in Wonderland is the movie of the week and Higgins had a good time with it, rating it as one of Tim Burton’s better films.  It leads into a debate about the quality of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Planet of the Apes, both of which speak to the odd range of Burton’s record.

Games cap off the second half of the show, starting with Fitch’s impressions of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.  He compares the combat system to Etrian Odyssey and admits that it’s not a good entry point for Mega-Ten beginners, recommending the recent Persona games for that purpose.  Higgins talks about his experience standing in a line at Gamestop waiting for a copy of Pokemon SoulSilver, a riveting tale.  The show closes out with a little bit of reader mail.

Spoiler timestamps:  Lost – Dr. Linus (2:35 – 18:30), Survivor (23:00 – 26:00)

Wherein we discuss Lost 6×07, subliminal advertising, Survivor (AKA the stupidest show ever), the awesomeness of Tim Burton, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, waiting in line for dumb Pokemon games, teasers for fan-made trailers, Star Wars: The Old Republic, the accessibility of MMOs, and things to do in San Francisco. Starring Ryan Scott, Mike Cruz, Andrew Fitch, and Ryan Higgins.

Runtime – 1:16:29
