Filmspotting #295: The Ghost Writer / The Shop Around the Corner / Top 5 Films of 1998
10:33 pm
March 13th, 2010
With Alice in Wonderland out of the way, Adam and Matty used their mainstream downtime to check out Roman Polanski’s latest film, The Ghost Writer. Starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan, the film reminds Matty of the trashy but entertaining thrillers of the eighties. He goes on to say that the campy aspects of the film could have been ratcheted up in addition to a bit more emphasis on the suspenseful scenes to produce a much better experience. Adam seems to enjoy the movie a little bit less than Matty, attributing some failure to McGregor’s performance and the execution of some secondary characters. While not Roman Polanski’s best, the guys have more positive things to say about the film than negative, so it may be worth checking out if you’re within its limited release regions.
After covering this week’s poll asking for Polanski favorites and an expectedly positive discussion of their third Lubitsch film, The Shop Around the Corner, “Arthouse Adam” and “Mainstream Matty” dive into their top five lists recounting their favorite films of 1998. With films like There’s Something About Mary, Dark City, Out of Sight, and The Big Lebowski populating their respective lists, Adam and Matty have something to offer for almost anybody’s movie tastes.
