Eric Vespe of Ain’t It Cool News joins the podcast this week, largely dominating the “What We’ve Been Watching” segment at the start of the show. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom stirs a bit of debate, considering Eric believes the film doesn’t get the attention and respect it deserves. He makes the argument that the Last Crusade is very derivative of Raiders of the Lost Ark, while Temple of Doom starts from square one with an entertaining experience. The first segment wraps up with a little bit of television conversation, covering both Caprica and Lost.
This week is light on news, so the review of Alice in Wonderland wraps up the second half of the show. Dave kicks things off by recognizing the huge financial milestones that the movie has hit, biggest non-sequel first week gross among many others. Most of the guys agree that the best performance of the bunch was that of Mia Wasikowska, who played Alice, while Devindra and Dave make a strong argument as to why Johnny Depp’s performance as the Mad Hatter was quite overwhelming. Adam feels like Tim Burton’s latest should have centered more clearly on the visual elements which were probably the film’s biggest strength, rather than the loose, self-indulgent plot elements that leave the ending open-ended. In the end, the /Filmcast crew attributes most of Alice in Wonderland’s success to a mix of nostalgia and Depp-hype, but admit that they did enjoy a handful of the film’s elements.
