This week’s review of Shutter Island is a little mixed, but it seems like Adam and Matty ultimately end up recommending the film and pointing out a handful of really strong components to Scorsese’s latest. Right off the bat, both of the guys praise almost all of the performances in the film, with Matty declaring Shutter Island as “adult Leonardo DeCaprio’s” best performance so far. On the other hand, it seems like the mysterious story drags along in some parts and has a fair chance at losing its viewers, however Adam says that it was compelling enough to grab him back in the end and deliver a solid conclusion.
Filmspotting’s Lubitsch marathon continues this week, starting off with a great voicemail that tries to convince you, the listener, to join in on discovering this underappreciated director. One of the most interesting aspects of Trouble in Paradise is its production before film censorship and the daring sexual references made during such a tenuous time.
Finally, this great podcast closes with Adam and Matty’s top five lead performances that should have won an Oscar, with the caveat that they must have watched the winning performance of that year. Wrapped around the closer is a listener contest to submit your own top five lists, with the winner taking either Adam or Matty’s top five list as a reward in the form of DVDs.
