This week’s Mobcast brings on gamer comedians Jeff Reitman and Adam McLaughlin along with the oft mentioned “Shoe’s Girlfriend”, Raychul Moore. Dan’s topic opens up the podcast by asking why “comedy” is a genre limited to film and not games. Clearly this is an intricate topic, but Jeff and Adam conclude that the interactive medium isn’t as complementary to comedy as is a passive medium like film.
Hype has been both a blessing and a curse for the games industry, bringing some developers to their knees due to unfulfilled expectations and ascending others to great success despite major flaws. Bioware seems subject to the most scrutiny among these guys, with much distaste for the “inflated” scores for Dragon Age and Raychul’s criticism of the universally loved Mass Effect 2.
The show wraps up with the Bitmob community question, which polls the crew’s favorite multiplayer game modes. This podcast marks the first of two with a set of gamer comedians in San Francisco, a move that seems to taste a little too strongly like advertisement.
Note: At the time of this posting, Bitmob.com is experiencing an extended maintenence cycle, which may be due to the redesign of the site’s blog posting tool that was teased at the end of the show.
Game-nerd comedians Jeff Reitman and Adam McLaughlin join the Internet’s ubiquitous gamer girl, Raychul Moore, and Bitmob’s Dan Hsu on this week’s show. The group discusses the difficulties of making comedic games, which game characters would be interesting in real life, how the Internet hype machine skews game reviews, maintaining in-game relationships, and their all-time favorite multiplayer modes.
