Retronauts takes a rare break from its usual format for a more freeform episode this week. Right off the bat the crew derail the usual cold opening with random ramblings about games based on popular literature. The show gains a bit of structure again by moving onto retro news.
Footage and screens of Sonic 4 leaked this past week, in between some speculation Sharkey is not kind to the game. It was also announced that Dimps will be developing the game, Ray and Jeremy really liked their work on Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush so the news makes them a little more optimistic. The guys are still generally sceptical, until they actually play it.
Jeremy wasn’t sure about Microsoft Game Room but having got a chance to check it out at X10 last week he is actually pretty impressed. The idea that they plan to build an experience around the games seems to have him and Chris Kohler eager to see how it pans out. How games deal with death is the discussion that takes up the majority of the rest of the show. These days especially alot of games deal with failure in very different ways, certainly an interesting topic to think about.
When plans to talk about Data East go awry (again!), Jeremy, Ray, Sharkey, and Kohler improvise and babble about vaguely game-related things for almost 90 minutes. It’s very free-form! But is it art?
