Beginning the conversation on this week’s episode of gdgt weekly is Google’s software integration of multitouch into Android 2.1. Peter and Ryan agree that multitouch was virtually the only major feature missing from Android’s offerings and Ryan briefly shares some of his experience with an updated Nexus One. Staying on the smartphone topic, Symbian has just gone open source, which may have been a good sign if it came earlier in the OS’s lifecycle but may signal some floundering in its last breaths.
Xbox Live support is getting pulled for original Xbox games on April 18 and gdgt’s best recommendation is to install XBMC on the old box and pick up a cheap new Xbox 360. Ryan personally hopes that the change is being made to implement new features like a heightened friend count cap and nicknaming.
The news that SlingPlayer iPhone finally got approved by AT&T is bittersweet for the gdgt crew, considering it shows that AT&T is becoming more confident in their network and yet anecdotal accounts indicated that the service really isn’t getting measurably better. Ryan is obviously a bit more pessimistic on the matter, going as far as to say that he wouldn’t even want video calling on iPhone due to hardware and network strain.
We’re back! Granted, we’re still in the midst of the post post-CES, post-Apple gadget news lull, but this week we’re talking about Android 2.1′s multi-touch update, Symbian going open source, the insane new Dell UltraSharp U2711 27-inch IPS monitor, original Xbox getting kicked from Live service in April, the Canon EOS 550D / T2i, and AT&T finally granting SlingPlayer access on iPhones. We’re also highlighting a discussion this week: LCD vs. E Ink — what do you like for reading? Oh, and just as a reminder, be sure to check out our latest Sonos S5 contest, as well as the gdgt iPhone cases now on sale!
