Filmspotting #290: Edge of Darkness / Michael Hoffman Interview / Top 5 Career Comebacks
12:50 am February 9th, 2010
Filmspotting stays on the mainstream track this week with a review of Edge of Darkness, the latest film directed by Casino Royale’s Martin Campbell. Adam and Matty agree that one of the best parts of the movie is Mel Gibson’s performance, which proved to be a return to form. Unfortunately, the film attempted to be more than just a revenge thriller and made half-hearted steps towards political intrigue, ultimately falling short. Nonetheless, it sounds like the guys enjoyed the film despite the unfulfilled potential.
The bulk of the rest of the show consists of Adam’s interview with Michael Hoffman, director of The Last Station. The film tells the story of Leo Tolstoy and focuses on his personal life, specifically emphasizing his relationship with his wife Sofya. Adam delivers some of his impressions along the way, praising the brilliant chemistry between Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren, who played Leo and Sofya respectively. The interview wraps up with some mutual gushing between Adam and Michael over costar James MacAvoy, who they agree is one of the best young actors of this generation.
