This week’s /Filmcast is unusually dense, with Sundance canceling last week’s show and piling up the backlog. Steve Weintraub of Collider.com and Dave Chen attended Utah’s indie film festival, prompting them to share their favorite films including Exit Though the Gift Shop and Buried (both of which were picked up for theatrical release).
The trailer for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps starts off the news segment, inspiring a lot of excitement despite the /Filmcast crew’s general disinterest in Shia Lebeouf. Disney recently shuttered Miramax, which signals the fall of financing for indie movies that don’t feature explosions or blood-pumping thrills.
Edge of Darkness is the subject of this week’s review and faces positive to middling opinions. Devindra and Steve both appreciate the Boston setting of the film, which proved to be an interesting backdrop for this revenge film. Everyone agrees that Mel Gibson delivers a very Mel Gibson-esque performance, which fits quite well into a fast-paced thriller like Edge of Darkness.
Covered films and topics: Steve/Frosty from Collider, Last Train Home, Animal Kingdom, Disappointment: The Extra Man, Buried, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Disappointment: Twelve, Damages S3 Premiere, A Single Man, Crazy Heart, The Stuff, Night of the Creeps, Pontypool, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Teaser, Disney Closes Miramax, Youtube’s streaming initiative a flop?, Edge of Darkness
In this week’s episode of the /Filmcast, David Chen, Devindra Hardawar, and Adam Quigley discuss the art of the new Wall Streetteaser, reflect on the business of indie cinema, and offer some of their favorite films and disappointments from Sundance 2010. Special guest Steve Weintraub (AKA Frosty) from Collider joins us this evening.
