The Oddcast

The Oddcast: 02/27/2010

by Ross Adams in Games698 days ago

The show kicks off with Sam talking about his time at DICE. The impression he got while there is that alot of the developers of more traditional games aren’t sure about the more casual platforms like Facebook. From developers reactions it seems they want to make the Facebook devs part of the conversation but also keep them at a distance. Some Sonic fans have planned a very interesting boycott. To protest of Sonic 4 which is apparently not what they want they will buy Sonic 1. This led to some pretty funny comments on the news article which...

The Idle Thumbs Podcast Episode 2: Scoops Horn

by Jonathan Downin in Games699 days ago

This is The Idle Thumbs Podcast Episode 2, and I’m Jonathan Downin, writing the post for this episode a little later than I should have. Civilization V gets some attention up front here, but there is little to go on at this point so the excitement level can only be so high. StarCraft 2 is striking many as VERY similar to the first game and this lead into a discussion about the different approaches to the RTS genre between Blizzards latest and Command & Conquer 4. The conversation ends up focusing on Kane’s ever-youthful appearance...

Joystiq Podcast 129 – JPXSG edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games699 days ago

After Justin’s utterly scathing opinions on the game last week, Chris and Ludwig have finished Heavy Rain and they enjoyed a whole lot more. They get into some of the strengths of the game, but are holding back for a Spoiled Rotten segment on the game next week. Ludwig touches on the recent Resident Evil 5 DLC and then the guys hit the big Nintendo news from the Nintendo Media Summit. The guys hit a few other topics including the recent banning issue on Xbox Live, but the bulk of the second half of the show is all emails. Ludwig manages, as...

Engadget Podcast

Engadget Podcast 185 – 02.26.2010

by Jonathan Downin in Tech700 days ago

The recent reveal of the Bloom Energy Server has caught many off-guard, but with good reason. It looks like it may be a real alternative to how the energy pipeline works today. Rather than try to explain how it works, head over to Engadget for the full rundown. It is definitely worth a look. The DSi XL fails to impress, but it does spur some conversation about a DS successor. Palm’s sales are not as high as expected and the guys share some thoughts on the state of company. It comes down to the handsets feeling sluggish at this point. The recent...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 154

by Jonathan Downin in Games700 days ago

It should almost go unsaid at this point, but this week’s Game Scoop! is all over the place. Word of a “cocktail-wear required” Final Fantasy XIII event kicks things off before David shares some love for the latest (and last?) Borderlands DLC. Charles got some hands-on time with Street Fighter IV for iPhone and has some positive remarks about its translation. The middle section here is dedicated to discussion about downloadable games that leads into another edition of Ryan Geddes 1-man segment, now titled Inverted Look. He talks...

Rebel FM

Rebel FM Episode 53 – 02/24/10

by Ross Adams in Games700 days ago

It was Nintendos turn to show off games this week so it’s another packed show this week. Before that though Anthony talks about his time with the newest Borderlands DLC, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. He has only played a couple of hours but it sounds like a substantial addition complete with new tiers of weapons to lust for. He has also been playing Miles Edgeworth and is loving it just as he has all the previous Ace Attorney games. Tyler thinks Just Cause 2 could end up following a similar path to Assassins Creed, with the sequel delivering...

4 Guys 1UP

4 Guys 1UP: 02/26/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games700 days ago

It’s another non-traditional show with David and Matt in Tokyo for undisclosed reasons. This does afford them the chance to sit down with 8-4‘s John Riccardi and Mark MacDonald to discuss the recent Nintendo announcements. The discussion covers the gamut of release dates to a possible new handheld at E3, but there isn’t too much of substance here. The second segment is even more meandering with the crew touching on Heavy Rain, the influence of Western development in Japan and the “neutering” of the US release of Yakuza...

Active Time Babble

Active Time Babble X: Final Fantasy XIII | 02/25/2010

by Ross Adams in Games700 days ago

Final Fantasy XIII is the only subject of note in this weeks ATB. Xenoblade is briefly touched on in news but once that’s over it is onto FFXIII.One would expect spoilers during a near 2 hour conversation of a largely story oriented game but somehow this is an entirely spoiler free episode. With the story only vaguely discussed alot of the chat revolves around where Final Fantasy stands in relation to the current gaming landscape. While the game is not drastically different from what has come before it is enough of a change that it bears some...

The Game Informer Show: Episode 18

by Derek Lavigne in Games700 days ago

It seems this week for the first part, the GI guys may not be recording in their normal spot and/or with their normal equipment as the audio a bit echoey. In the first segment, Heavy Rain is the topic of discussion and there is a lot of praise all around for it. They make the point that although it may play like it at times, game director David  has urged that this is not an adventure game.  Another interesting point that is made is about how well the decisions you make work in seamlessly with the story. The second segment focuses on the recent...

Podcast Beyond

Podcast Beyond, Episode 127

by Jonathan Downin in Games701 days ago

It’s a short and sweet Podcast Beyond this week with the guys deciding to do a show in honor of Ryan’s Birthday. The news kicks off with apathy over the announcement of King of Fighters XIII. Yakuza 3 gets some discussion and the guys reveal that the hostess club section of the game has been taken out of the US release. Heavy Rain is getting some DLC and this leads into a discussion about spoiler and how they feel about them. Colin argues that spoilers have actually gotten him to watch TV shows that he wouldn’t have otherwise...

Three Red Lights

Three Red Lights Podcast Episode 137

by Jonathan Downin in Games702 days ago

Three Red Lights is back in more ways than one. They somehow managed to talk the higher-ups into letting them go back to their roots and head into the lands of the explicit– and it is glorious. X10 talk is riddled with impressions with the guys touching on Fable III and Alan Wake. The latter sounds like it is among the crews’ more anticipated games. The forthcoming Borderlands DLC gets a lot of discussion and Nate wants to play Dante’s Inferno since God of war 3 is still a ways away. The improvements to to Major League Baseball...

CO-OP Live 303: Sooo Indie!

by Derek Lavigne in Games702 days ago

Another live show and the Area5 team keeps on improving week after week. First on the docket on this (mostly) indie game episode is the recently released The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom on XBLA. Like most of the game industry, CO-OP has nothing but praise for this game and Ryan plays some of it live for the viewers instead of relying on timing pre-recorded clips like the previous weeks. Overall opinions seem to be that it is a must buy for fans of puzzle games. A recorded segment is throw in next with Jason and Cesar discussing Skate 3, which...

MacBreak Weekly

MacBreak Weekly 182: There’s An App For That

by Jonathan Downin in Tech702 days ago

It’s a special all software picks episode this week. Apparently Merlin has been wanting to do an episode like this for a long time and with little Apple news in the past week, Leo thought that this was a good time to do it. Merlin has long been a spokesperson on productivity, so he has a lot of great suggestions. Since this episode is very specific to personal productivity and the Mac, it is an easy one to skip if you usually tune in for topical and curent news commentary. There is a full list of recommended apps at the wiki for this week’s...

The Geekbox

The Geekbox: Episode 54

by Jon Cole in Games, Movies, TV702 days ago

With the UGO redesign over and his vacation complete, Mike Cruz finally returns to the Geekbox to talk about… Old Spice commercials and green screening.  Fortunately, Burn Notice talk comes up next and Fitch deals some dirt on a potential steamy relationship with Michael Westen and a relatively new character. Ryan Scott has been playing P.B. Winterbottom, a highly stylized puzzle game that is built upon time-shifting mechanics reminiscent of Braid.  Running on Xbox Live for only 800 points, Ryan thinks the game is worth far more than that...

Mobcast

Mobcast Episode 42

by Jon Cole in Games702 days ago

This week’s Mobcast brings on gamer comedians Jeff Reitman and Adam McLaughlin along with the oft mentioned “Shoe’s Girlfriend”, Raychul Moore.  Dan’s topic opens up the podcast by asking why “comedy” is a genre limited to film and not games.  Clearly this is an intricate topic, but Jeff and Adam conclude that the interactive medium isn’t as complementary to comedy as is a passive medium like film. Hype has been both a blessing and a curse for the games industry, bringing some developers to their...
