Adam and Matty tag-team the veritable duo of The White Ribbon and The Book of Eli this week, starting off with the former. The White Ribbon is only available in limited release, but Adam is still a big fan nonetheless, citing the great dialogue, excellent visual style, and powerful acting. The Book of Eli is far more ubiquitous and available nationwide, so naturally “Mainstream Matty” found a lot to enjoy about the film, including Denzel Washington’s performance and the post-apocalyptic cinematography. While the writing is a bit on the nose, the Filmspotting crew both had a good time overall.
For their top 5′s, Adam and Matty go over a plethora of top 5 lists over various topics in 2009. Of all the lists, actor and director discoveries was one of the most comprehensive, including Antonio Campos of Afterschool, Carey Mulligan of An Education, Duncan Jones of Moon, and the dynamic pair of Christoph Waltz and Mélanie Laurent of Inglourious Basterds.
