David Hellman, artist most notably known for his work on Braid, is on this week in the developer chair, and he proves to be a fun and thought-provoking guest as always. With David as 1 of the premiere names in indie development, indie games take center stage and kick things off this week. The pureness of Canabalt gets some attention and Area5‘s Ryan O’Donnell talks about his experience as a judge for the IGF awards.
3D and games get some discussion and Ryan provides a nice breath of fresh air with his optimism in the face of the general negative opinion on the validity of 3D display technology. The conversation then moves to CO-OP, the Area5 team and what the future holds. Things then turn back to game mechanics and the minutiae of good design.
In the 3rd segment, specific game talk takes over, starting with Darksiders. David Hellman talks about Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and why he believes it is a successful, bold and fresh take on the series. Discussion about the state of the Zelda and Mario franchises closes-out the show.
