Retronauts Episode 85: 01/21/2010

by Ross Adams in GamesJanuary 22nd, 2010 @ 12:10 pm
Retronauts

Microsoft’s Game Room is the first thing up for discussion in retro news, there is some debate whether Microsoft can realistically hit thousands of games within a year. This leads into a more general discussion about downloadable retro titles and the fact that the game room interface seems like a nicer or more interesting interface for that sort of thing.

Capcom’s fake retro revival of Dark Void is an interesting experiment and the crew enjoy the fabricated story behind it. Jeremy makes the comparison to Retro Game Challenge but feels Dark Void Zero keeps too many NES conventions that Retro Game Challenge tried to refine with its fake games.

Sunsoft is the main subject of this weeks show, unlike most subjects chosen for the show there’s no context to discussing Sunsoft, the guys just thought it could be interesting. Sunsofts many licensed games (not all of which were good) aswell as some of their original titles are all hit. While they made games that some in the west consider the best on the NES there were also some apparently great games that didn’t make it over here. Frank recently did a playthrough of one such game, Mr. Gimmick, for the Retronauts blog.

Covered games and topics: Retro news, Dark Void Zero, Retro Game Challenge, Sunsoft

Frank Cifaldi joins Jeremy, Ray, and Chris again to discuss the potential of Microsoft’s Game Room, the fake history of Dark Void Zero, and the mysterious history of Sunsoft.

Man, for a good part of 2009 and the last few episodes Retronauts has just bored me. They used to cover big, awesome topics like Sonic and Castlevania – overarching games series. And they covered genres and consoles too. The survival horror and Sega Saturn episodes are their best for me. But the topics for a while now have just been so flat. It's just me. But come on, there's so much that they haven't covered. Where's the Resident Evil episode, you know? Racing games… there's so much they can do. First-Person Shooters. Rocket Knight? Really?

Obviously I appreciate that it's just stuff that doesn't interest me, and must interest other people. But they seem to be avoiding the big topics. After leaving many a comment about how this site doesn't cover Retronauts, I now apologize. Sorry.

I thought that the episode before last was pretty good. I like when the guys have a chance to flex their "games so obscure that this is the first and last time you'll ever hear about them" muscles, personally, though I am in agreement about not having more flagship series episodes.

I going to have to agree Retronauts is pretty plain these days, time for some Game Scoop I guess!

Personally I usually always find their discussions interesting, even if I know absolutely nothing about the subject. I will agree that the main discussion in this episode fell a bit flat though, I'm not sure they had much to talk about with it. The first half of the show was pretty good though, I thought.
