Filmspotting #283: The Road / Dancer in the Dark / Top 5 DVDs of 2009

by Jon Cole in Movies794 days ago

This week, Adam and Matty tackle The Road, a much anticipated film adaptation of the novel written by Cormac McCarthy.  Adam kicks off the review, quickly expressing his disappointment in some of the more thrilling scenes and distracting musical swells.  Both of the guys agree that the performances are fantastic, but Matty isn’t sold by the dialogue.  In the end, both the premise and atmosphere of The Road prove to be excellent, which seem to more than make up for the negatives of this film. Dancer in the Dark is this week’s entry into the...

Windows Weekly 133: A Fish Called Windows Audio Only

by Jon Cole in Tech794 days ago

Windows Weekly kicks off with some obligatory talk about Modern Warfare 2 and it seems that Paul is still addicted to the game.  Paul also got a chance to appear on last week’s TWiT, which leads into some conversation about the future of TWiT (definitely worth listening if you’re invested in the content on Leo’s network, starts at about the 9:00 mark). Apparently, web browsers are still stuck in the past and Microsoft isn’t too happy about it.  Security issues with Internet Explorer 6 are getting more and more overwhelming every day and...

gdgt weekly 065

by Jonathan Downin in Tech795 days ago

It’s a rather dry episode this week. Friend of the show, Michael Gartenberg is on, and quite frankly, the show suffers a bit for it. While he has some nice insight into the topics of the week, the atmosphere of the episode is quite different, and the fun flies out the window. The recent declaration of the death of the CrunchPad is the center of attention and there are a few theories about what happened in the development process expressed here. Michael feels like it was a product without a market, but Ryan feels like it had a bit more promise. The...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 144

by Jonathan Downin in Games795 days ago

Facebook games start off the cast and not surprisingly, they are discounted as “not games.”  A new Medal of Honor title is on the way from some of the original Call of Duty team and the crew is excited about a potential challenge to the reining leader in modern FPS war games. The Prince of Persia re-reboot gets a mention and Daemon is excited about a true sequel to Puzzle Quest. Pets are now available in the Xbox Live Marketplace, and it is baffling that Nintendo hasn’t tread this turf already. Who can say no to a virtual pet? New...

Joystiq Podcast 119 – Simply2Chaotic edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games795 days ago

Justin has been playing the Saboteur, and he calls it a “mix of Assassin’s Creed II, Mercenaries 2 and GTAV put together, if they were made 5 years ago.” This is not exactly a ringing endorsement, but he feels like there is some fun to be had. Ludwig gave the Bayonetta demo a go and he is enjoying its ridiculous action. There is also yet more love for Assassin’s Creed II and word of DLC in January. There is a new Medal of Honor on the way, but Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is the forthcoming sequel that spurs real...

4 Guys 1UP: 12/04/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games795 days ago

4 Guys 1UP is back to its regular format this week with special guest Gary Whitta. If you have been following the PC gaming scene for  while, you may remember Gary as the Editor-in-Chief of PC Gamer. He has gone onto screenwriting, and his latest is the Denzel Washington thriller, Book of Eli. Gary has also had a hand in the stories of Duke Nuken Forever and Gears of War. He is an amazing guest, and David deserves a lot of credit for thinking of him. A new Medal of Honor game is in the works, and it is going to be a “modern combat”...

The Oddcast: 12/03/2009

by Ross Adams in Games796 days ago

Tales of thanksgiving trips start off the show this week. Not much besides Assassins Creed 2 got played over the break it would seem. A surprisingly spirited debate about the potential non-gaming applications of Natal is up next. There are certainly some interesting ideas, but whether they become reality remains to be seen. The crew move on to discussing some indie/free games including Captain Forever, Continuity and Fantasy of the Sword, and there are a lot of points hit here. Tina recommends checking out 1UP community member Matt Clark‘s...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 117

by Jonathan Downin in Games796 days ago

Gran Turismo 5′s release date has finally been set for the month of March, and a demo is set for release on December 17th. The guys are talking about a promotion that is going on through GT5 that allows the best racer to actually enter the racing circuit. Last year’s winner is doing well, and has even landed a 2nd place win. Unfortunately, US residents are not eligible. The discussion moves to RPGs and the guys talk about how they choose names for RPG character. Roper goes ridiculous and Ryan leaves the set one. What do you do? Emails...

Rebel FM Episode 42 – 120309

by Ross Adams in Games796 days ago

Back to a regular length show this week and Tyler kicks things off with yet more IGF games he has been playing. He’s specifically enjoying space based entrants at the moment. Arthur has started playing the 2008 game Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, the guys relate it to playing with LEGO and think it’s alot of fun. There’s some discussion of Pandemics “swan song” The Saboteur Arthur and Anthony are a bit down on the game, they don’t seem to think it’s bad, just not great. Anthony played some League of Legends,...

The Geekbox: Episode 42

by Jon Cole in Games, TV797 days ago

Tryptophan talk opens up this week’s podcast, quickly (and gratefully) transitioning to some discussion of the Blu-Ray versions of Star Trek and Pixar’s UP.  Mike commits a grave offense by considering a standard Blu-Ray player over a PS3, but Higgins seems to empathize. Dragon Age: Origins seems to have captured Karen’s attention, despite the seemingly generic premise.  Mike is clearly continuing to have fun with the game, after the great start he mentioned on the last episode of CastMedium’s podcast.  Ryan Scott had...

The Game Informer Show: Episode 9

by Derek Lavigne in Games797 days ago

In the first segment, Matt Helgeson is joined by Andy McNamara, Matt Bertz, and Phil Kollar to discuss their recent top 200 games of all time list. They’ve received numerous scalding emails accusing them of just throwing a list together randomly, but assure the listeners that there were 6-8 hours of meetings with lots of yelling involved in putting together the list. Everyone admits that they had their own biases but all ended up having some of their favorites thrown off the list. For the second part of the show, Andy McNamara hangs around...

Out of the Game, Ep. 16

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc797 days ago

Out of the Game is back after a lengthy hiatus. The first half is spent talking about the works of Malcolm Gladwell and his motion recent collection of essays, What the Dog Saw. Everyone seems to find his thought process engrossing, but N’Gai has a few bones to pick with his examples and execution of theories. If you haven’t read his work before, Outliers or The Tipping Point are great places to start. The second half is much more chaotic with a huge range of topics. N’Gai talks about his approach to the SATs as a lad, and Jeff...

/Filmcast Ep. 78 – Fantastic Mr. Fox

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV798 days ago

In this week’s brief episode, the /Filmcast crew got a chance to watch Dan Eckman’s Mystery Team.  Since it’s the first big picture effort from Derrick Comedy, the film is far from perfect though shows a lot of potential for these new filmmakers.  Ninja Assassin gets a bit of time as well, with guest C. Robert Cargill taking point in saying that it simply didn’t meet expectations for the standard campy ninja flick. The news segment is short, mostly dealing with Paul Greengrass’s departure from the Bourne 4 project. ...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 164

by Derek Lavigne in Games798 days ago

With the holidays in the US this week, the GWJ crew is down to three with Shawn Andrich, Julian Murdoch and Rob Borges holding down the fort. Starting off the show as usual with games they have been playing which features a lot of talk on Assassin’s Creed 2 up front. Shawn and Rob have finished the game but Julian voices his frustration at some of the more platform-heavy sections of the game. Talk then moves to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, with the guys taking the opinion of thinking the game is very difficult. Continuing talk about Dragon Age:...

MacBreak Weekly 169: This Is What Happens Larry

by Jonathan Downin in Tech798 days ago

It’s a rather news-filled episode this week with the recent Crunchpad weirdness taking over the first part of the show. Michael Arrington released information on the now halted project that places the blame squarely on their partner in the project. After some initial skepticism, Leo and crew come around to believing Arrington’s claims. Alex is well versed on the topic of tablets as he also began the process of producing one before finding it next to impossible to make at an affordable price. Psystar has lost the initial round of litigation...
