The GameSpy Debriefings checks in right before the holidays with a Game of the Year-focused episode. This year, they made the controversial choice of making platform awards available only to platform exclusives with a separate multiplatform award for games that are spread around.
Since the 360-exclusive offerings were a little bit thin, GTA: Episodes of Liberty City was an easy choice for the crew. The PC game of the year was also a fairly easy choice, but Plants vs Zombies surprised a lot of readers because the ineligible Dragon Age PC was so impressive. The PS3 proved to be the most difficult of the bunch to judge, considering Sony brought the heat with plenty of strong exclusives.
GameSpy also had some community choice awards, which the League of Legends developers took full advantage of by offering players exclusive skins if the game rose to the top. The rest of the podcast was largely dominated by widespread doubt in GOTY picks, so it’d ultimately be wise to simply take such lists with a grain of salt.
Ready your ragecaps, folks, as we dive straight into our Game of the Year discussion! Will Tuttle, Ryan Scott, Anthony Gallegos, Brian Altano, and Brian Miggels hop into the studio to discuss GameSpy’s picks for 2009, as well as how they came to a consensus (and why some people are dumb for their picks). Enjoy!
