/Filmcast Ep. 81 – Avatar

Avatar is under /Filmcast’s microscope this week, with Dave appropriately kicking off the show announcing his recent interview with James Cameron.  He proceeds to talk about Nine, Rob Marshall’s musical-turned-movie which came under plenty of scrutiny in the film critic community.  Gratefully, Dave as well as guest Dan Trachtenberg didn’t think the movie was so bad, though it suffered from the music video style directing with too many quick cuts.

The sad news of Brittany Murphy’s death starts of the news, largely dominating the segment.  It’s particularly tragic because Murphy seemed to just be entering her own with a couple of great performances in recent films like 8 Mile and Sin City.

The true feature presentation of this episode is the review of Avatar, which Dan starts off with a glowing review comparing it to the likes of Star Wars in terms of cultural significance.  Adam isn’t nearly as sold on the experience, disagreeing with Dan on the strength of the characters and quality of the plot.  Dave isn’t sure how to feel about the pacing, which is both perpetually exciting and yet sometimes rushed.  Ultimately, they all agree that the visual style and use of 3D are brilliant.

Covered movies and topics: Dan Trachtenberg from the Totally Rad Show, Nine, Terminator 2 (Blu-ray), An Education, 25th Hour, Naked Lunch, Brittany Murphy Dies at 32, Brian Singer Directing X Men First Class , Robin Hood International Trailer, Avatar Review

This week, Dave Chen, Devindra Hardawar and Adam Quigley have some harsh words for Rob Marshall’s Nine, discuss the greatness of Terminator 2 on Blu-Ray, praise the works of David Cronenberg, and try to muster some excitement for Ridley Scott’s rendition of Robin Hood. Special guest Dan Trachtenberg joins us from The Totally Rad Show.

This Dan Trachtenberg fellow is a child. I've never heard a film critic spew such mind boggling overdramatic hyperbole for a cartoon before in my life. And to compound things Devindra backed him up. I feel dumber for having listened to this podcast.

    • Haha. Dan is from The Totally Rad Show. I haven't listened to this one yet, but yes, Dan can be like a child, and that's his charm. He is not your typical high-brow film critic, he is more of a film lover/enthusiast. I can see how some may not like him though, especially in this context.
