In probably one of the densest episode of Filmspotting, Adam and Matty tackle Up in the Air, Invictus, and their top 10 movies of 2009. To start out, Matty recalls the disdain that Adam had for Jason Reitman in 2007 for his Golden Globe nomination for best director. Luckily, things have turned around with this film, which Adam characterizes as having a few great scenes and no mistakes. All that said, the tallest praise they give to Up in the Air is a place in both of their top ten lists at the end of the show.
Clint Eastwood’s Invictus doesn’t nearly get as much fanfare as Reitman’s film, sadly enough. Matty just didn’t feel the emotional resonance and impact that a film about Nelson Mandela should really have. Both of the guys agree that both Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon perform excellently with what they’re given, but the clear weak spots of the film are the weak screenplay and poor direction from Eastwood.
As always, Adam and Matty are joined by Michael Philips of the Chigaco Tribute and Scott Tobias of the AV Club to round up their top ten movies of 2009. A summary couldn’t do their choices justice, so you’ll just have to listen to the podcast to hear their great picks.
