As always, the /Filmcast starts off with Dave’s latest viewing, this week’s being Avatar. The film will be reviewed next week on the show, but he just wanted to take the opportunity to tell people to watch it. Dave also talks about Parks and Recreation, a show that started off as a blatant rip-off of The Office and has come into its own through season two. Devindra has also been watching a lot of television, giving ringing endorsements to Community, Dollhouse and Dexter.
The biggest news this week is JJ Abrams is planning on making a film based on the story of the Sundance and BAFTA favored documentary Man on Wire. The documentary had more of a narrative than most, almost coming off as a heist movie, so it seems fit for an even more dramatic reinterpretation.
This week’s review covers Clint Eastwood’s latest, Invictus. Guest Anne Thompson seems to summarize the positive thoughts of everyone else, citing the great performance of Morgan Freeman, the story’s necessity to be told, and the inspirational power of this film. On the other hand, Matt Damon’s character is agreed to be unnecessary, the score is horrible, Eastwood’s directing is lacking, and the sports elements are less than ideal.
Covered movies and topics: Avatar, Parks and Recreation, It’s Always Sunny Xmas Special, Community, Dollhouse, Dexter Finale, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call: New Orleans, Mel Brooks Collection, Death at Funeral Trailer, JJ Abrams Planning Fictionalised Telling of Man on Wire Story, Invictus Review
This week, Dave Chen, Devindra Hardawar and Adam Quigley discuss the creative bankruptcy of the Death at a Funeral Remake, gush about Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant, and review The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-Ray. Special guest Anne Thompson from Indiewire joins us.
