Mobcast Episode 31

December 1st, 2009

The Mobcast is more or less back to normal this week, welcoming ex-EGM editor Crispin Boyer.  At the top of the show, the guys talk about both their most anticipated games of all time and some of those that didn’t meet their expectations.  Ultimately, it seems like the excitement really stems from their respective childhoods and the nature of having a limited number of games.

Michael’s topic tries to make sense out of the seemingly inexplicable upcoming Dark Void movie and why AAA games typically don’t get represented on the big screen.  The guys toss out some dream director/video game movie combinations as well, with Ridley Scott and Michael Mann coming out as the favorites.

The community topic is probably the most interesting one, asking the crew how they diversify their writing style by consuming other writing.  Crispin has a lot of praise for long form magazine writing from the great folks at Wired Magazine and attributes a lot of importance to the opening hook of an article.

Aaaaaand we’re back. Special guest and EGM alumnus Crispin Boyer joins regular Bitmobbers Michael Donahoe, Dan “Shoe” Hsu, and Demian Linn to discuss games that didn’t live up to our expectations, why we (some of us) stop or slow down our gaming, how our review criteria has changed over the years, and movie directors that we’d like to see take on game-to-film adaptation projects.

Our community question comes from Michael Pangelina, who asks this three-parter: “What writers or books did you look up to when you were starting out, and who would you recommend for the Bitmob community’s aspiring writers to garner inspiration from? What kind of authors do you guys enjoy now, as well?”

Whenever I hear those sound effects it always makes me sad my Game.com is broken, still in my cupboard though, not getting rid of that!

Next week's show looks even more promising, but I might just be saying that because Robert Ashley's voice is music to my ears:

@Aaron_Thomas Just finished recording next week's Mobcast which features @robertashley, @BitmobShoe, @Bbretterson, and myself.
