4 Guys 1UP

4 Guys 1UP: 11/06/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games823 days ago

Episode 2 of 4 Guys 1UP is immediately high energy with newly appointed Editor-in-Chief of www.ea.com, Jeff Green, as the special guest this week. Things start off with Jeff hitting on a plethora of topics, all centered around his transition from press to development to PR/corporate online content master. A lot of this is treaded ground, but Jeff is entertaining as always. The solid game talk doesn’t start until the 1:20:00 minute mark though. Moving into games, Jeff talks about recent tent-pole PC releases Torchlight, Borderlands and Dragon...

The Geekbox: Episode 38

by Jon Cole in Games, Misc, Movies824 days ago

Halloween dominates the first part of this week’s episode of The Geekbox, which is ironic because none of the guys seem to really be interested in celebrating the holiday.  Brock Sager joins the podcast yet again in Mike Cruz’s absence and talks a bit about how high school students still use Halloween as a way to get free candy.  Ryan Scott discusses the Saw film franchise and dares to suggest that Christopher Nolan’s Riddler might be similar to the Jigsaw killer, fitting in that much darker Batman universe. Arkham Horror leads...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 141

by Jonathan Downin in Games824 days ago

The anticipation for Modern Warfare is growing by the day, and no one was more shocked to see a “leaked” IGN review than the IGN guys. It turns out that it was a Photoshop fake by one of IGN’s own community member. We’ll see how close that 9.5 is on Tuesday at 12:00 am PST. Greg shares a story about his choice not to rescue a couple dogs that were in the street on the way to work. The PS3 Netflix implementation requiring a disc again has the crew wondering why, and the guys miss that it has to be this way due to its use of...

Filmspotting #280: Precious / When Father Was Away on Business / Top 5 Bad Screen Parents

by Jon Cole in Movies824 days ago

Filmspotting follows up last week’s review of Antichrist with a comparably devastating film, Precious.  Based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire, this film tells the story of a young African-American woman who’s sexually abused by her father and emotionally tortured by her mother.  Both Adam and Matty were absolutely destroyed by this film, some segments forcing them to cover their faces due to some of the powerful imagery in the film.  There’s a little bit of push and pull concerning the casting choices of Mo’Nique as Precious’s mother...

Idle Thumbs 50: “Farewell, Video Games” or “The Shitty Wizard”

by Jonathan Downin in Games824 days ago

Dragon Age starts-off this epic last episode of Idle Thumbs. All 3 of the guys have torn themselves away from Torchlight to get some time in with the game, and they are enjoying it. There are some quirks to it, but the dialog has the guys interested and they taut the PC version as the way to go. Torchlight has Chris completely hooked in its net of loot and gear enchanting. Herein is a classic wizard story for the history books, and Chris does not come out unscathed. The recent Modern Warfare 2 issues get some time before the regular show portion...

Rebel FM Episode 39 – 11/05/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games824 days ago

This week’s cast kicks off with Left 4 Dead 2, but quickly moves on to Modern Warfare 2 and the group, with guest Tina Sanchez, spend over 30 minutes discussing the various recent developments surrounding the game. The overall tone is rather negative, with the limits on the PC and Xbox multiplayer modes and the recent controversial video being cited. Tyler and Arthur both state they will not be picking up the game in light of these issues. Tyler has been playing GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony and has nothing but praise for the game. Borderlands...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 114

by Jonathan Downin in Games824 days ago

There is more controversy in Guitar Hero land. No Doubt are the latest band to be unhappy with their likenesses being used in-game to perform other artists’ songs. The collectors edition for God of War III has been announced and it contains a whole bunch of stuff that you don’t really need. Netflix has started shipping the PS3 discs, and the guys go into the BD Live implementation that it will be using. Battlefield Bad Company 2 will be getting a PS3 exclusive beta next month. We are slowly seeing the market even out when it comes to...

The Game Informer Show: Episode 6

by Derek Lavigne in Games825 days ago

Matt Helgeson once again welcomes a cast of GI Editors for 3 targeting segments. The first segment is all Dragon Age: Origins and Matt seems to think it is directly up the alley of editors Joe Juba and Matt Miller. The pair completely agree and think the refinement of character interaction since Mass Effect makes the game a great experience. The second segment takes a look at the newly announced DSi XL. Phil Kollar lends his opinion that if Nintendo plans on making a bigger system, they should have put the GBA slot back in. Editors Meagan and Annette...

The recent news that Best Buy is looking to team-up with CinemaNow to deliver digital content is the first topic up this week. If  they can get the hardware partnerships in place, this could be a formidable entry into a burgeoning market. Apple has the same sort of idea and is rumored to be looking into creating an alternative to cable through iTunes. The guys feel like this is an up-hill battle for them with the wariness of content providers. Barnes and Noble’s Nook e-reader received a very warm reception upon its unavailing, but they are...

/Filmcast Ep. 74 – A Serious Man

by Jon Cole in Movies825 days ago

Richard Kelly, director of Donnie Darko, hits off the show talking about his new film, The Box.  Dave discusses Boondock Saints 2, which everyone agrees will be entertaining but won’t offer much to those who didn’t enjoy the original.  Richard puts in a plug for I Could Never Be Your Woman, a 2007 romantic comedy that didn’t get nearly enough attention despite its good script. The news segment starts off with the news that Miramax president Daniel Battsek quit his position, a move that is suspected to begin not only the end of Miramax but...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 160

by Jonathan Downin in Games826 days ago

The Gamers with Jobs guys have always skewed towards the PC more than many others, so Torchlight is what has the group excited this week. The biggest pulls of this game continue to be its ability to suck you in, along with its $20 price point, and both aspects are duly are appreciated here. Forza 3 has been a surprise hit with the guys, and Uncharted 2 coop gets some negative comments. There is no topic of the week with Rob sitting in for Shawn. Instead, the guys for a more free-form discussion which leads into releases of this holiday season, the...

Giant Bombcast 11-03-2009

by Derek Lavigne in Games826 days ago

With Vinny out on assignment, friend of the show Jared Rea sits in on the podcast to bring a wave of fighting and music games to the table. After a lengthy Tekken 6 discussion, Jeff talks about his evil impulse buy of DJ Hero: Renegade Edition and having to explain it even to the employees he purchased it from. Brad quickly discusses his loot addition swapping between Borderlands and Torchlight. Jared dives back into some more obscure fighting game tournaments as well as Forza 3, which Jeff has also been playing since some good Giant Bomb logos...

Halloween stories, or the lack thereof, start things off this week with Mike being the only one who chose to don a costume, as a hobo. There are various improvements coming to 1UP, including revamped my1UP and user review sections. Travis says to look for those soon, hopefully by the end of them week. Travis has been playing Torchlight and shares about his loot-filled experience with the game. Mike has gone deep into the player creator in WWE SMackdown vs. Raw, and Jade vents about the difficulty of A Boy and His Blob. Conflicted feeling about DJ...

Drunken Gamers Radio 10-30-09

by Derek Lavigne in Games827 days ago

An early episode of Drunken Gamers Radio this week starts off, as always, with a mailbag segment. A lot of emails this week bring in great drinking stories. Another listener continues the bashing of Jessica Chobot from last week. Reviews this week start off with Forza 3, which Moe loves and Hilden thinks it’s unforgivable that there is a mandatory install. Up next is the new Ratchet and Clank game, which everyone seems to love. The retro review for the week is Sonic 3D blast, which Hilden doesn’t seem to love, but thinks it is worth...

The HotSpot 11/03/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games827 days ago

Kevin starts this one out with the 1st of 4 games that get glowing impressions this week, Dragon Age Origins, which he scored a 9.5/10. He says that the narrative is great, and that if you give it 30 minutes, you will be hooked. Atypically, the Xbox 360 version loses out technically to the PS3 and PC versions. Justin says that The Ballad of Gay Tony is a great closer to GTAIV before Dead Space Extraction and Ratchet and Clank close out the love-fest. Things turn for the negative with Tekken 6 and the announcement of the DSi XL. As is the case with...
