CastMedium Podcast 012 – 11.16.09

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, Tech814 days ago

Last week’s podcast was 1 of the longest ones yet, and this week we deliver the shortest 1 yet. The replacement for Good Grief, The Oddcast, starts the podcast discussions this week. Tina and crew had a great “first” episode and it is worth checking out. We also discuss the trend in podcasts starting to attempt monetization through iPhone apps. A quick Modern Warfare 2 discussion kicks-off the games section. Unlike others who weren’t happy about the situation surround the PC version, Jon is is still standing his ground. Brief...

Player One Podcast: Episode 160 – The bleeps, the sweeps, and the creeps

by Jonathan Downin in Games814 days ago

Things start off on a light-hearted note with the guys joking about possible forthcoming entries into the music game with peripheral genre. Theremin Hero anyone? It is no surprise that the Player One guys  are extremely excited about New Super Mario Bros.Wii, and they get into it here. Natal rumors have sparked a resurgence in discussion surrounding the device, and the topic of what types of genres could benefit from this kind of control scheme leads the talk. As always, Phil capitalizes on the opportunity to bring up Milo and get into proper Peter...

TWiT 221: Get Off Of My Planet

by Jonathan Downin in Tech814 days ago

Leo rarely covered gaming topics on TWiT, but this is the second podcast in the last week in which Modern Warfare 2 has received some discussion. The issues surrounding the PC version are covered, as the the 1st day sales figures, and it shows how mainstream Infinity Ward’s latest game is. Geocities is officially gone. The $3.6 billion acquisition by Yahoo turned out to be one of the worst investments of all time. Although this news is enough to make anyone in their mid-20s nostalgic, anyone much younger will never know how it used to be....

Windows Weekly 130: Trapped, Like Carrots

by Jon Cole in Tech815 days ago

Modern Warfare 2 has seemingly infected all media this week, dominating the first half hour of Windows Weekly.  The Call of Duty franchise leads to the topic of PC game distribution and Leo and Paul agree that Steam and Good Old Games take the cake. Paul discusses Windows 7 on netbooks, deciding that productivity is still difficult on the small screen though he thinks they’re capable of light computing and/or watching ripped movies.  Leo shares his experiences with Windows Mobile 6.5 and Paul tries to reveal some of the features of the OS that...

Filmspotting #281: The Men Who Stare at Goats / Farewell My Concubine / Top 5 Films of 1999

by Jon Cole in Movies815 days ago

Adam and Matty start of this week’s Filmspotting exercising their psychic powers in their review of The Men Who Stare at Goats.  Unfortunately, both of the guys agree that the film doesn’t live up to its brilliant premise, the story of an Army unit infused with paranormal abilities. Adam says that the last thirty minutes played like the writer (Peter Straughan) had no idea how to end the film.  The film is sufficiently star-studded, but Ewan MacGregor’s character is entirely unbelievable and George Clooney’s great performance isn’t nearly...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 142

by Jonathan Downin in Games816 days ago

NPDs kick off this week’s Scoop. DJ Hero sales came in below even the moderate expectations for the game with only 122,000 units sold. Most of the crew have finished Modern Warfare 2, and the opinions are universally positive. Charles has been playing some Left 4 Dead 2 and his review will be going up on Monday night. Microsoft has recently banned between 600,000 and 1 million Xbox Live accounts due to association with modded consoles. This is a huge number, and if accurate, points to the 360 piracy problem being a lot bigger than many imagined. GameStop...

4 Guys 1UP

4 Guys 1UP: 11/13/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games817 days ago

Seth Killian, of Capcom Unity, is on this week as the special guest and most of the discussion centers around Street Fighter. His story of landing at Capcom shows that being good at games can get your foot in the door, although his hand in creating one of the biggest fighting game tournaments of all-time probably had a lot to do with it as well. NPDs start the news this week and there are a few surprises. The PS3 bested the Xbox 360 again in October on the hardware side. This marks a continuing downward trend for Microsoft’s box. Xbox 360...

Engadget Podcast 171 – 11.13.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech817 days ago

The Zune HD just gets better and better. Microsoft has loaded the Zune Marketplace with a few free 3D games, including indie classic Audiosurf and a version of Project Gotham Racing. The games perform well and in the case of PGR, have graphics that rival those found in PSP games. The only thing missing is a workable control scheme which has been a constant problem for iPhone games. The Palm Pixi is now available and the verdict is that if it can be had cheap, it is totally worth it. Walmart currently has a deal that will get you a Pixi for $30,...

by Jonathan Downin in Site817 days ago

In our constant pursuit to make CastMedium more user-friendly, we have introduced a new commenting system, Intense Debate. It is developed by Automattic, the company behind WordPress, the backbone of this little website which we like to call home. Intense Debate offers many features that are not available in the standard commenting system that are beneficial not only to us, but to you as well. You can now login with your Facebook, Twitter or OpenID accounts, but if you don’t want to deal with any of those, you can still comment freely without...

Rebel FM Episode 40 – 111209

by Jonathan Downin in Games817 days ago

Arthur’s news of landing a job with Team Xbox starts the cast, and his first order of business will be writing the review for Assassin’s Creed 2. Dragon Age takes the limelight before Tyler touches on Captain Forever again after last week’s discussion of the free online game. The guys get into Modern Warfare 2, and Arthur has a few things to say about the now infamous airport scene. Anthony talks about the Civ-like Europa Universalis and things stay in the realm of strategy games with the recent Dawn of War II expansion. Anthony...

The Game Informer Show: Episode 7

by Derek Lavigne in Games818 days ago

With the recent release of Modern Warfare 2, most of the Game Informer team hasn’t been playing anything else. To that extent, this week’s show is a departure from the normal three topical segments with Matt Helgeson and crew opting instead for only two. In the first segment Matt, along with Jeff Cork, Adam Biessener, and Matt Bertz discuss their likes and dislikes about MW2′s single-player campaign. Although there are some gripes about the game starting the player back in basic training again, the conversation quickly switches...

The Oddcast: 11/12/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games818 days ago

Well, that was quick. Good Grief is back in its new form, The Oddcast. This first episode is somewhat anomalous in that it has 2 guests, developer James Silva and Q Entertainment producer James Mielke. Sam mentions that they hope to have a guest every week though, so maybe it is going the 4 Guys 1UP route. Things are a little less irreverent than a classic Good Grief episode, but we’ll see if that continues. Natal is the first topic this week with the group speculating on its release. The conversation then moves onto game sales and the gaming...

The Geekbox: Episode 39

by Jon Cole in Games, Misc, TV818 days ago

The EA acquisition of Playfish and the proliferation of casual games starts off The Geekbox after a brief callback to strip club discussion from last week.  They also talk about the EA layoffs, specifically at Mythic Entertainment which which were likely in response to the poor performance of Warhammer Online. Television continues to be a staple on The Geekbox, with a continuation of the Venture Bros talk from last week.  Venture Bros and Space Ghost are compared for their validity as “stoner” shows, with the bulk of the crew saying the latter...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Episode 130

by Jonathan Downin in Games818 days ago

The Three Red Lights podcast is back and as off topic as ever. Mark Bozon is on TRL, along with every other IGN podcasts this week, and he is discussing his review for Modern Warfare 2. The guys stay away from any of the issues surrounding the games release and focus on the game itself. Apparently Hilary Goldstein wanted to give it an 8.0. Rumors purporting that Natal will be priced at the equivalent of £50 in Europe have been floating around. That is equal to about $80 US. Also mentioned is that there will be 14 games ready at launch. If Microsoft...

/Filmcast Ep. 75 – The Box

by Jon Cole in Movies819 days ago

Matt Singer joins the regular crew of the /Filmcast this week, opening the “What’ve You Been Watching” segment with his recommendation of The Grand, a star-studded casino film available on Netflix Watch Instantly.  Dave just watched A Christmas Carol and tries to determine why there’s so much contempt for it so long before release. The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time trailer gets some talk here, with the first impression being: “it looks expensive”.  Devindra doesn’t seem to understand what British accents or Jake Gyllenhaal have...
