With the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii it’s finally time for the long awaited second Mario episode of Retronauts. After a brief bout of Mario impersonations it’s onto retro game news, of which there is little.
The discussion kicks off with Super Mario World. There is some debate about whether it was a true “showcase” of the Super Nintendo’s power. The consensus seems to be that it was very understated and subtle in its use of the SNES’s features, but generally used them in interesting ways. The conversation turns to Mario spins offs, such as Mario Kart, Mario Paint and some of the Mario edu-tainment games.
It’s then onto some Mario games that didn’t come out on a Nintendo console, including the Philips CD-I games. Hotel Mario is briefly covered, as is the unfinished and unreleased (but still available in prototype form) Mario’s Wacky Worlds. The 16 Bit era is closed-out with a quick chat about Super Mario All-Stars, and a game that may or may not be a “proper” Mario game, Yoshi’s Island.
The show comes to a close with a mention of Mario RPG, which Jeremy, Chris and Ray all agree has not aged well visually, but are glad it spawned the recent Mario & Luigi games.
