The Oddcast: 11/12/2009

The OddcastWell, that was quick. Good Grief is back in its new form, The Oddcast. This first episode is somewhat anomalous in that it has 2 guests, developer James Silva and Q Entertainment producer James Mielke. Sam mentions that they hope to have a guest every week though, so maybe it is going the 4 Guys 1UP route. Things are a little less irreverent than a classic Good Grief episode, but we’ll see if that continues.

Natal is the first topic this week with the group speculating on its release. The conversation then moves onto game sales and the gaming landscape in the down economy. Mielke comes on in the 2nd half and things take a turn for the awesome. The whole segment is filled with anecdotes about his producer role and the developer environment in Japan. Its a must listen, much in the same way as last week’s 4 Guys 1UP with Jeff Green.

We contacted Tina and she let us know that The Oddcast should be a Monday release going forward. And get ready for a nice, Ryan Scott remixed theme song.

Covered games and topics: Natal, tempered sales projection due to unemployment, gay sexual content, indie games, James Mielke, Q and the creative perspective, platforms

It’s a James fest! As the first official episode of 1UP Oddcast, we brought in a few special guests. We’re first joined by indie developer, James Silva, creator of Dishwasher Dead Samurai. We check out the latest on Modern Warfare 2, and explore what it takes to make an arcade game. And then James Mielke (former EIC of EGM), stops by and shares the latest at Q Entertainment and what it’s like working for a developer.

Anyone else find this "first" episode to be pretty amazing? The interview with Mielke was great. He is a very interesting guy with a lot experience. It makes me wish that he had been on more podcasts when he was at 1UP. Q Entertainment would be smart to give a him a consumer-facing podcast.

Yeah, it was a good episode. Check out Mielke's episodes on Retronauts, particularly the Sega Saturn episode, which is one of their best.

A backlog segment might be good, ala 1UP FM – playing old games each week, like a 'game club'.

Haven't had a chance to listen to it, but I'm looking forward to it!
