Richard Kelly, director of Donnie Darko, hits off the show talking about his new film, The Box. Dave discusses Boondock Saints 2, which everyone agrees will be entertaining but won’t offer much to those who didn’t enjoy the original. Richard puts in a plug for I Could Never Be Your Woman, a 2007 romantic comedy that didn’t get nearly enough attention despite its good script.
The news segment starts off with the news that Miramax president Daniel Battsek quit his position, a move that is suspected to begin not only the end of Miramax but also indie film distribution labels. The new Avatar trailer gets mostly positive opinions, though it reveals most of the major beats of the film (so beware spoilers).
A Serious Man is this week’s review, which gets a ton of praise from around the whole table. It’s agreed that the film is possibly the Coen Brothers’ most personal, so the discussion naturally peaks during the spoiler section at the end of the show.
Note – The /Filmcast feed is now home to The Tobolowsky Files, a new podcast featuring the fantastic actor Stephen Tobolowsky telling some funny, true stories taken from his own personal life. It’s definitely worth a worth a listen!
This week, Dave Chen, Devindra Hardawar and Adam Quigley assess the state of Avatar’s marketing, discuss their thoughts on the Men in Black series, and lament the imminent death of Miramax. Writer/director Richard Kelly joins us for this episode. Richard Kelly’s newest film, The Box, is out in theaters on Friday, November 6th.
