TWiT 217: The A.I. Spy Club

by Jonathan Downin in Tech842 days ago

It’s a joke-laden show this week, but they are not all winners. Comedian and host of the Science Channel’s Future of:, Baratunde Thurston, is on and adds a lot of energy to the mix. Twitter starts out the topics with the news that lists are being integrated into the service. It is not available to everyone yet, but all accounts should have the new feature soon. Google is going into “offensive mode” with a round of hirings and acquisitions on the way. The guys discuss the use of peer bandwidth which essentially allows Google...

Joystiq Podcast 113 – Plunger McGillicutty edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games845 days ago

There is a lot of praise for Uncharted 2 at the beginning of this episode. Chris touts the animation as being the best he has ever seen by citing many 1-off animations being used. Ludwig is equally impressed with the game and the guys can’t understand Tom Chick’s bafflingly negative take over at Crispy Gamer. Brutal Legend gets some coverage with Randy Nelson talking about his review. Along with many others, he found the game to have quite a few unfortunate problems. This game is falling in a weird place with everyone wanting to love...

Engadget Podcast 167 – 10.16.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech845 days ago

The Sidekick issue continues to be the big talk of the tech world. The guys point out that Microsoft/Danger have now stated that the lost data has been mostly recovered, but they took their time in acknowledging the problem which only exacerbated the issue. This impacting people’s comfortability about data being kept in the cloud comes up here as well. Motorola’s play to become relevant in the current marketplace hasn’t not gone over too well. You can check out the Engadget review for all the details, but the general impressions...

/Filmcast Ep. 71 – Trick ‘r Treat

by Jon Cole in Movies845 days ago

This week’s /Filmcast takes a ride on the wild side with the director of Brick and the recently released The Brothers Bloom, Rian Johnson, who gives a brief warning at the top of the show for the show’s… explicit content.  Without detailing this content too much, it can simply be said that Rian brings the slashfic to /Film. Rian dominates the What’ve You Been Watching segment with an interesting discussion about A Serious Man, the recent Coen brothers film.  Most of the guys agree that the film is drawn a lot closer to...

Rebel FM Episode 36 – 10/15/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games846 days ago

There area  lot of games covered this week, starting the forthcoming Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron. Anthony had a chance to get some hands on time with it and it’s sounds like it is going to be solid. The guys quickly touch on the co-op in Modern Warfare 2 and then get into a lengthy discussion about Borderlands. Arthur doesn’t have too many nice things to say about the game and he cites the unskippable cinematics as baffling since Gearbox is positioning this as a game that is good for multiple playthroughs. Anthony is reviewing...

The Danger/Sidekick data loss situation has been the biggest story of the week. Danger holds all of Sidekick user’s data in the cloud and something went horribly wrong and they lost all of that data. This has called the idea of keeping all data in the cloud into question for many people. According to Danger, there still may be hope for user to retain their data if their phone has not been turned off or ran out of battery. Barnes & Nobles is on the verge of announcing their competitor to Amazon’s Kindle and it is rumored to have a...

The Geekbox: Episode 35

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc846 days ago

Karen is back on this week and she is following up last week’s discussion about Orson Scott Card with her own personal decision to boycott the Dragon Quest games after Fitch related that the original creator is a Japanese Nationalist. Ideologies of Japanese Nationalism include justification of Japan’s WWII actions and denial surrounding the Korean and Chinese occupations. Comics talk takes up a chunk of time before group the covers the topic of outlets receiving huge swag, and if that influences coverage. This is spawned out of the fact...

CAGcast #175: The Citizen Kane of Podcasts

by Derek Lavigne in Games846 days ago

Starting off the show with stories as usual, CheapyD recounts his trip to Disney Sea in Tokyo the previous week with his wife. Wombat then tells about his adventure with his family going pumpkin picking, which included his wife getting a speeding ticket after she insisted on driving so Wombat didn’t get one. Cheapy was unable to find Demon’s Souls to talk about like seemingly everyone else, so instead he picked up Mirror’s Edge, which he is actually enjoying so far. Wombat shares how he was able to play Tony Hawk RIDE and DJ Hero...

Drunken Gamers Radio 10-11-09

by Derek Lavigne in Games847 days ago

As usual, DGR starts out with drunk dials and emails, which seem a bit on the short side this week. From there, the reviews segment starts up the same way many podcasts do this week, with Demon’s Souls. Hilden, in particular, said that his game kicked his ass but for some reason left him wanting more, which seems to be the consensus in the gaming community. DJ Incompetent drops in his own audio review of the PSPgo. He discusses it from the point of view of someone who has never owned a PSP nor a PS3 and decides that if you are buying it to...

Idle Thumbs 47: “The Lord of the Donk” or “And That’s Who the Lord of the Donk Was”

by Jonathan Downin in Games847 days ago

Chris quickly touches on Risen at the beginning this week and then the group moves onto Brutal Legend. They point out the polarizing effect that it has had in the press with the wide range of scores which it has been receiving. The games seems to fall into the good to great category with the guys here with them talking up the well constructed and atmospheric world as the real draw. Nick attended a Left 4 Dead 2 event and is sharing his experiences with the new Scavenger mode. The new mode has the 4 player team collecting 16 gas cans to power a centrally...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 157

by Jonathan Downin in Games847 days ago

It’s a special rabbitcon edition of the podcast this week. For those of you that have not been following the GWJ podcast, rabbitcon is a yearly meet-up of the GWJ crew at Julian “rabbit” Murdoch’s place for a few days of drunken game playing. Check out this video for a peek into the madness. iPhone gaming is slowly winning over the whole crew with everyone chiming in with some praise for Dungeon Hunter. It is a fairly deep, Diablo-style dungeon crawler that sounds to be well worth your $6.99 if you enjoy this type of game. Scribblenauts,...

Command Prompt, Episode 64

by Jonathan Downin in Games847 days ago

Charles Onyett is on this week and he adds some much needed energy to the podcast. The usual group of Steve, Jeff and Marissa can prove to be a little dry at times so this is a nice change of pace. Steve has finally come to his senses and deemed CrimeCraft to be one of the worst games around. As he points out, there are no less than 4 different ways in which the developers are looking to make money from this game, and 3 of them entail you giving money directly to them. Also, there is absolutely no crime-related gameplay– huh? Jeff is talking...

Giant Bombcast 10-13-2009

by Derek Lavigne in Games848 days ago

This week’s Bombcast is crashed by Capcom’s Adam Boyes and freelancer John Vignocchi who bring along with them some champagne which makes for a crowded, at times even nonsensical show. Most of the first part of the show is taken up by John telling various stories that may or may not come back to haunt him later. Adam stays quiet for most of the time but doesn’t hesitate to crack open the alcohol. Getting into what they have been playing, Brad’s time has been eaten up solely by Uncharted 2 which, like many people, he feels...

The HotSpot 10/13/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games848 days ago

Uncharted 2 is up first this week and is still being praise, but Brutal Legend gets the most time at the beginning of this week’s HotSpot. This is a Tim Schafer game so the writing and story are entertaining the guys to a large extent as expected. The multiplayer also gets the thumbs up here though so it sounds like the game isn’t completely reliant on its narrative. It’s available today so do yourself a favor and pick it up. Guitar Hero Van Halen has started shipping out to those that pre-orded Guitar Hero 5 and it sounds like...

CO-OP – Episode 217: Special

by Jonathan Downin in Games849 days ago

This is the last episode of the “season” for CO-OP and there is not much new here. Cesar was in Japan for the Tokyo Game Show and the small clips he shot while there make up the only new content this week. This is another “Japan experience” type show where there is very little game content. Instead, we get to watch Cesar eat curry, visit Don Quijote and generally walk the streets of Tokyo. The game segments this week are repeats of Street Fighter 4 and GTA 4: The Lost & Damned. These appeared in the last show before the...
