Rebel FM Episode 37 – 10/22/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games839 days ago

Anthony has finished his 1st playthrough of Borderlands and ended up giving it a 4/5 star review on GameSpy. This is in pretty stark contrast to what Arthur had to say about the game last week. Anthony is also talking about Dante’s Inferno PSP after having some time with it recently. He says that it is more God of War-like than ever, but that doesn’t sound like a bad thing. Tropical 3 also comes up as a follow-up to the discussion about the game on this week’s Geekbox. Tyler has been playing a lot of games recently and he talks...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 112

by Jonathan Downin in Games839 days ago

Sega has confirmed that they are bringing out an updated version of the racing classic, Daytona USA. The new HD version will be titled Sega Racing Classic, but it has yet to be confirmed outside of an arcade release. Gran Turismo gets a bit of discussion before Greg decides that he wants to break the record for consecutive hours of GTAIV play. The guys talk about Borderlands and then move onto Uncharted 2. Everyone is still singing the praises of Uncharted 2 and this leads into a discussion of PS3 having the best exclusives of the year. DJ Hero...

The Geekbox: Episode 36

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, TV839 days ago

Anthony Gallegos is on this week, and so continues the constant cross-pollination of fellow Hammersuit personalities. Ryan Higgins begins with his experience at Star Wars: In Concert. After a bit of movie talk, the group moves onto Borderlands where Anthony reveals that he will probably be giving it a 4/5 star review on GameSpy. This leads into a more general MMO discussion and Anthony sharing some EverQuest memories. TV talk starts with the lamenting of the death of wrestler and Mario TV show star, Lou Albano. Venture Borthers gets some love and...

Out of the Game, Ep. 15

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies839 days ago

It’s a 3-man show this week with Jeff out for this one. Starting with movies, District 9 takes up good portion of the beginning of the show with Robert finally getting around to seeing it. The impressions are positive all-around with some misgivings about the buddy-flick nature of the last 1/3. Shawn predicts that this will turn into a trilogy. The discussion stays in the realm of movies with the central topic turning towards special effects and CG versus practical executions. Uncharted 2 starts the game talk, but they are holding off the...

Idle Thumbs 48: In Space

by Jonathan Downin in Games840 days ago

Infinity Ward has announced that the multiplayer in the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 will not have dedicated servers support. The guys speculate that this is a way for them to stave off piracy. This decision has the Call of Duty PC fanbase up-in-arms. Our own Jon Cole wrote an article on this very issue which was featured on Bitmob.com, so check it out. Chris is still enjoying Demon’s Souls despite its rigid difficulty. He describes it as meaningful difficulty though, as it is not just cheap kills, but rewards actual skill. Chris has written...

MacBreak Weekly 163: Stroke The Mouse

by Jonathan Downin in Tech840 days ago

Apple released a slew of new products yesterday including a unibody iterations on the iMac and white MacBook, an up-speced Mac Mini and a new multi-touch enabled mouse, dubbed the Magic Mouse. This many big products aren’t usually launched without a keynote event, so these releases caught many off-guard. The new iMac now come in 21.5″ and 27″ models. While 27″ sounds huge, Apple has moved to a 9×16 aspect ratio for their displays, so they are not really that much bigger, just wider. The line also received processor and...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 158

by Jonathan Downin in Games840 days ago

Brutal Legend legend starts off the game talk this week and it is characterized here in a way that seem extremely fitting after seeing the critical reception. The guys state the the gameplay is used as a story delivery system more than anything else. While it is fun, what really drives the game is the story and characterization. Uncharted 2 also commands a fair amount of time with a similar discussion revolving around the success of creating believable and entertaining characters through not just voice acting, but animation and character acting...

Giant Bombcast 10-20-2009

by Derek Lavigne in Games841 days ago

After a rowdy and crowded podcast last week, the Bombcast is back to basics. Much of the first segment is taken up by talks of Brutal Legend and Borderlands. While there is praise abound for both, the guys seem to agree that Borderlands is the better game, although not without its flaws. NPD talk takes up much of the news section as a few surprises jump onto the charts this month. Although there seems to be no one shocked that PS3 topped the console charts following the release of the Slim and price drop, the news that The Beatles: Rock Band outsold...

at1UP: 10/20/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies841 days ago

It’s a long episode this week. Scooter is on talking about Borderlands since he reviewed it earlier in the week. It’s safe to say that he is enjoying the game a whole lot considering his B+ score. Jade talks about her semi-frustrating experience with Cooking Mama 3 and shares a love for the cuteness that is A Boy and His Blob. 1UP has added 2 more blog/columns to the site. Chiptuned and Add to Queue are centered around music in games and movies respectively. It nice to see 1UP offering more coverage on things in the periphery of gaming. In...

The HotSpot 10/20/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games841 days ago

Borderlands is proving to be received in a much more positive light than many previously thought. We touched on it in this week’s CastMedium Podcast and may have been a little hasty in our dismissal of the game. Demon’s Souls continues to capture imagination with Brian talking about his strange attraction to the game. Justin got his hands on the PSP version of GTA: Chinatown Wars and it sounds like Rockstar has polished it up nicely. The tentatively forthcoming Sam Raimi directed Warcraft movie is still in the news. Justin voices his...

CO-OP – Episode 301: An Age of Wonder

by Jonathan Downin in Games841 days ago

It’s the start of a new season of CO-OP, and it’s the same– but that’s not a bad thing. New Super Mario Bros.Wii starts things off and the guys are excited about its multiplayer prospects. They may be going a little far by saying that it is like Super Mario Bros. 4 though. Matt takes over the 2nd segment with a trip to the office of Gaijin Games to interview the indie developer about their forthcoming WiiWare game, Bit.Trip Void. While the game probably isn’t on many people’s radar, it is cool to see an indie...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 135: Tit For Tat

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, TV841 days ago

The first movie up this week is Where the Wild Things Are. There was a lot of anticipation for this movie considering its roots and director. The guys praise the look that Spike Jonze achieved, but it just didn’t have the “Je ne sais quoi” factor that they were hoping for. On the other hand, Jeff and Dan are raving about Paranormal Activity, with Jeff calling it one of the best executed films he has ever seen. Uncharted 2 takes up the whole game section and everyone loved it. Dan states that he felt the story was actually less...

Mobcast

Mobcast Episode 25

by Jonathan Downin in Games842 days ago

The Mobcast is on a roll and is getting stronger with every episode. Aaron Thomas seems to be taking over the main host role and he is great in the position. He is a perfect fit and gives a personality to the Mobcast that it has been a little light on until now. Multiplayer games and their appeal, or lack thereof, are covered in the first topic this week. Jason and Aaron are the members of the group who are not into multiplayer games and it’s nice to have this view represented. The next topic is things each person hates in a game they love....

CastMedium Podcast

CastMedium Podcast 008 – 10.19.09

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Tech842 days ago

We are a little leaner on topics this week, but we have realized that even if we only had 1 topic, we could easily fill 30 minutes. Uncharted 2 starts off the game talk this week. The reception of the game has been overwhelmingly positive, aside from Tom Chick’s review over at Crispy Gamer. Erik finished the game and has a lot of great things to say about it, but he feels like Chick’s review has a lot of strong points to add to the discussion. Jon is halfway through Brutal Legend and shares his praise for the game. Brutal Legend’s...

Player One Podcast: Episode 156 – Watching Your Six

by Jonathan Downin in Games842 days ago

It’s the 3 year anniversary of the Player One Podcast and the guys are celebrating by… doing a normal show. They were hoping to have a new theme song, but they have extended their submission contest so you still have a chance to win 2 games if you can compose something worthy enough. As usual, Tweets start the episode with the first question asking about what kind of cars the guys drive. They all have cars that have served some serious time, and there are some fun stories from the old EGM days. The group also discusses some of their...
