Adam and Matty take the most anticipated fall movie by the horns with this week’s review of Where the Wild Things Are. Both Filmspotting guys praise the film, taking care to respond to the complaints from other reviewers over an oversimplified determinant of the film’s premise – a child dealing with his parents’ divorce. They believe that the film’s “wild things” are meant to be personifications of different aspects of the protagonist Max’s psyche.
Matty thought that the movie was left open to interpretation, allowing the viewers to use their imaginations. Adam takes it a step further by noting that writer-director Jonze and co-writer David Eggers never resort to sentimentality or cliché as most stereotypical “kid’s movies” are wont to do.
The Kurosawa marathon wraps up with a discussion of High and Low. Adam really thinks that this particular film ranks among Kurosawa’s best along with Rashômon, whereas Matty seems to be satisfied only with the police procedural aspects of this classic. Nonetheless, it seems like a fitting bookend to this epic series.
