The Engadget Show – 002: Steve Ballmer, Droid, Nook, and new Macs

by Jonathan Downin in TechOctober 24th, 2009 @ 8:06 am

Engadget ShowThe Engadget Show is back with its 2nd episode and this is a big one. Coinciding with the launch of Windows 7, the special guest is Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. This is a huge deal for Engadget, and really shows that Engadget is taken very seriously within the technology community.

Steve Ballmer is personable, and somewhat candid here. Windows 7 starts off the discussion, and he is excited about the new iteration. As usual, Josh doesn’t shy away from the hard topics, and Ballmer handles them well. He doesn’t simply skirt questions and stick to PR “message speak.” Issues of Zune integration across product lines, a potential tablet product and general market approaches are all touched on during the almost 40 minute interview.

With the interview portion going long, the guys aren’t left with much time to talk about the week’s news. Windows 7 and the new Apple products get some discussion before the Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader takes the spotlight. Joshua feels that this is a tipping point for e-books, but Nilay argues vehemently that it will not be. The guys touch briefly on Verizon’s Android push before the show closes out on music from Bit Shifter.

Update:  The show is now available in mp3 format.

Covered news and topics: Windows 7, different pushes, state of Windows Mobile, Zune, Apple, Courier, Pink Phone, unibody MacBook, B&N Nook, Verizon/Nokia Droid

Do we really need to tell you what this is all about? Steve Ballmer. Windows 7 launch day. Pure magic. Sit back and enjoy a spirited conversation with the CEO of Microsoft — then stick around to watch Josh, Paul, and Nilay get into it over the week’s news!
