Anthony has finished his 1st playthrough of Borderlands and ended up giving it a 4/5 star review on GameSpy. This is in pretty stark contrast to what Arthur had to say about the game last week. Anthony is also talking about Dante’s Inferno PSP after having some time with it recently. He says that it is more God of War-like than ever, but that doesn’t sound like a bad thing. Tropical 3 also comes up as a follow-up to the discussion about the game on this week’s Geekbox.
Tyler has been playing a lot of games recently and he talks about finishing Plants vs. Zombies and World of Goo. World of Goo is now being sold at a “pay what you want” price, so if you haven’t played it yet, go and get yourself a copy. The groups talks about Brutal Legend and feel that it is somewhat over-rated in the press before moving on to reader topics.
The reader topics are all over the place with the biggest one being the recent reveal that Modern Warfare 2 will not support private servers. They do a good job of describing what this means and why people care about the issue.
Covered games and topics: Borderlands, Dante’s Inferno PSP, Tropico 3, Uncharted 2, Plants vs. Zombies, World of Goo, Brutal Legend, emails topics, over-rated games, MW2 private server issue, emails

Arthur starts to get really annoying by constantly shitting on Uncharted 1. Also I can understand that the stealth part in the beginning is the weakest section of the second Uncharted, but 10 tries seriously?
And he obviously cant play without aim assist so he gets stuck in a lot of situations, but this is not the game`s fault.
Also he always talks about a lot of other people who got stuck in a lots of situations, common dude who are those people and why I havent found a single reviewer or somebody on a podcast complaining about those situations? Also on the last Rebel FM he was talking shit about the Multiplayer although he havent tried it yet, and after a few minutes he says ” I dont care what they put in MW 2 I already know the game will be fucking amazing…” again without having played the game. Fanboyism at its best.
I agree to some extent, Arthur does tend to throw unsubstantiated claims out every once in a while, but he isn’t completely off-base here. He is not the first to have a problem with there being no aim assist. If I’m not mistaken, the TRS guys mentioned it as well. Also, 10 tries on the stealth section does seem like a lot, but if it happened to him, you can be sure it has happened to others.
On the MW2 front, I thinks it’s somewhat fair for him to say he “knows it will be amazing.” People have personal preferences and with Infinity Ward you pretty much know what you are getting at this point. Having said that, dismissing Uncharted’s multiplayer without playing it is less understandable.
I haven’t picked up Uncharted 2 yet, but I have a theory on why they included the stealth section. I hate stealth missions/games but I think it might have been a good decision to start Uncharted 2 with it because it then accentuates how action packed the rest of the game is. Could I be right?
Arthur kinda hates Sony maybe he gets mad that better games are on the Ps3? who knows? But it is weird that he hates fanboys but he’s the one with most fanboyism on the podcast, to each is own I guess!
Uncharted 1 and 2 are amazing games IMHO!
Naughty Dog is probably one of the best developers in the industry. They have definitely made the best game currently available on the PlayStation 3, and you can bet your bottom dollar that they had a myriad of play testers working and playing every thing throughout the game. If the opening portion didn’t go smoothly for the majority of players, they would have spotted it. Dismissing Uncharted 2′s multiplayer shows Gies for what he is out of hand – plain and simple, anti-Sony to some extent.
Gies seems to me to be stridently anti-Sony. What’s irritating is that he doesn’t pick Sony’s major faults – he simply makes up stuff to try and strike them down. The Uncharted games are universally acclaimed; he’s just plain wrong here. Perhaps he should consider keeping his mouth shut until he’s able to talk about a topic he’s actually knowledgeable on. Though the problem isn’t just isolated to him on the Rebel FM podcast – a lot of other so called “prominent” podcasts have people on the shows that really just do not know what they’re talking about, regardless of whether their partisan or bipartisan on the issue of console wars.
That’s why I don’t listen to Rebel FM – a) immaturity, and b) lack of general knowledge. I quote NeoGAF user Struct09 when they said, “I stopped listening after the inclusion of all the the dick and fart jokes, along with the annoying bickering between Anthony and Arthur.” Call me when they cut the crap.
I’m so tired of this rise of anti-”fanboy”-ism that’s rising up in the gaming community. And I’m even more tired of this idea that gaming journalists aren’t allowed to have and air their preferences.
Not liking Uncharted 2 and/or dismissing Uncharted 2′s multiplayer does not prove “anti-Sony” sentiment, just like the PS3 wouldn’t suddenly be taken of the map if Uncharted 2 got some bad review scores. That’s just not how things work. I really don’t like the gameplay in Metal Gear Solid games, does that make me an Xbox 360 fanboy? If I dismiss the next Metal Gear game because I feel like there has been a poor precedent or pattern concerning a particular aspect of the game, does that mean I’m “anti-Sony”? No, because that’s nonsense.
Just like me and anyone else, Arthur has two resources to budget – time and money. If he chooses to neglect playing the Uncharted 2 multiplayer because he thinks his time would be better spent hopping into a more proven multiplayer experience (Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, etc), nobody should be going after him with pitchforks. Arthur’s opinion seems a bit underdetermined to me, admittedly, but he shouldn’t have to defend himself from potential attacks.
Without wanting to go much further into this, I just want to say that there are very few podcasts that make the promise of being historians or academics concerning video games. The ones that are produced outside the bounds of larger companies, especially, seem to be platforms that these podcasters just want to enjoy with their respective communities. If you don’t like them, don’t listen to them, it’s that simple.
Last time I checked, Modern Warfare 2 isn’t out yet. Perhaps he should have set aside time to play what is already being almost universally lauded as game of the year. (As a side note, calling it game of the year already is silly – Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2 haven’t hit yet – but the point is that everybody agrees that it’s amazing.)
No, very simply, it’s just another part of a greater trend of him not liking the PlayStation 3. And that’s fine. Reporters working for FOX News generally don’t like everything liberals say, either. It’s just that Geis picks the stupidest things to complain about. He can’t even do that properly.
As per knowing your stuff, a decade or so ago it seems like somebody went around and visited every human in the western world and told them that they can open their mouth and talk about anything, even if they don’t know about it. I think – and I might be wrong here – but I think that happened with the proliferation of the internet. The last thing we need is more stock podcasting with people not knowing what they’re talking about. There’s more than enough of that already. I suggest that if people want to talk about games, they talk about topics that they know about, not topics which they know nothing about.
@ Jon Cole
Hi Jon, I kinda agree with you about preferences in podcasts like rebel fm, I enjoy it but as somebody who prefers ps3 I just sometimes don’t get the logic of Arthur complaints (poo pooing on multiplayer without playing it is just fanboyism star journalist or not). I do disagree with him alot but the annoying factor in this podcasts is the bickering IMO. You made a long post which was an interesting read but Arthur seems like he prefers undermining Sony then talking about why we should want a 360, seems that he hates Sony for some reason. I’m in the camp that competition is good.
I played Gears of War 2 and thought it was the most generic game I’ve ever seen but that’s my opinion and many people disagree which is fine as long as keeps the conversation civil. Something about that engine….
Coming back to your first point about being tired of anti-fanboyism well that’s the way people see Arthur especially cause he is pretty fanboyish with his unsubstantiated claims about Sony but that doesn’t mean Ps3 people hate him, they just think he’s wrong.
Arthur is a journalist but he’s a gamer also so please don’t bring the he’s an experienced journalist and I’m just a guy that’s wrong cause at the end of the day he seems more like a fanboy then a fan and that’s fine until he starts talking about the ps3 fanboys which at least back their claims with facts unlike him.
Wow that was long so Jon Cole it really doesn’t help your tired of the anti-fanboyism cause I say this with all due respect but the complaints are with Arthur and not with you. Your argument is of course on topic.
That’s my 2 no like 40 cents hahaha
Have a good one Jon
TJ!
Gies is not a journalist. I’d hesitate to even call him a reporter. Both of those imply some level of fact checking a credibility – two things which are lacking in his case.
