It’s a 3-man show this week with Jeff out for this one. Starting with movies, District 9 takes up good portion of the beginning of the show with Robert finally getting around to seeing it. The impressions are positive all-around with some misgivings about the buddy-flick nature of the last 1/3. Shawn predicts that this will turn into a trilogy.
The discussion stays in the realm of movies with the central topic turning towards special effects and CG versus practical executions. Uncharted 2 starts the game talk, but they are holding off the big discussion until next week so everyone has a chance to give it some time first. N’Gai talks a bit about DJ Hero after his 2 recent hands-on experiences with the game.
As the game talk winds down, Shawn brings up IGN’s Music Hub and points out the lack of editorial integrity on IGN’s part for trying to pass off advertising as a community site. This is not a music-centric page on IGN, it turns out to be a PR mouthpiece for Activision’s Hero series. This alone is a problem, but as Shawn points, things are even worse with the cross-linking happening between this and IGN’s “real” music section.
Shawn also mentions at the end that they are in the process of deciding whether or not to make the show weekly or not.

This episode is a must listen if only to learn about how IGN is in bed with Activision. Start listening a few minutes before the hour mark if you’re interested.
It’s definitely good to hear Shawn talk about the IGN music section where he can articulate it better than on Twitter. I was definitely confused about the issue when reading his feed, but now I’ve got a better feel for what he found, and I think he was right on to get upset about it.
